Softball Opens CSAC Schedule With Sweep Against Cedar Crest College

RADNOR, Pa. –
The Cabrini softball team opened up its 2010 Colonial States Athletic Conference regular season schedule on the right foot Saturday, sweeping Cedar Crest College at Cabrini Field. The Cavaliers rallied for an 8-6 victory in game one and cruised to an 11-3 triumph in the second contest.

Sophomore 1B Angela Shookster ignited the Cabrini comeback in the first game, launching a two-run homerun in the bottom of the third inning. Shookster also reached base on an intentional walk in the fifth frame.

Cedar Crest plated four runs through two innings versus Cabrini rookie P Melissa Miller. However, senior P Liz Zimmer came on in relief and earned the victory, logging 5.0 innings and striking out three.

The Cavaliers scored three runs and broke a 5-5 stalemate in the top half of the fifth inning. Junior C Chrissy Squillace and sophomore SS Sammy Thompson each recorded two hits in game one.

Cabrini scored the second game's first 11 runs, including seven in the bottom of the third inning. Senior 3B Kerri MacNeal, freshman CF Casey O'Connell and Shookster each drove in two runs in the win.

The Cavaliers' offense boasted eight players with at least one hit. MacNeal reached base three times.

Freshman P Marcelle Crist notched her third win of the young season on the mound, pitching four innings, allowing four hits and striking out two. Crist lowered her team-best ERA to 0.54 in 26.0 innings of work this season.

Cabrini (6-4, 2-0) resumes its non-conference schedule Tuesday, March 23 at Centennial Conference foe Swarthmore College. The opening pitch of game one is set for a 3 p.m. start.
