SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team resumed its 2010 non-conference regular season schedule Tuesday afternoon against Centennial Conference opponent Swarthmore College. The Cavaliers split the doubleheader with the Garnet, winning game one, 12-1, and dropping game two, 6-5.
Sophomore 1B Angela Shookster went 3-for-3 at the plate in game one and drove in six runs. Shookster slammed her team-leading third homerun of the season in the top of the first inning, a three-run shot off of Swarthmore freshman pitcher Kate Smayda.
Shookster led off a seven-run fifth inning for Cabrini with a solo homerun to left field. She also drove in runs in the third on a sacrifice fly and later in the fifth on an RBI single to left field.
Freshman CF Casey O'Connell recorded three hits in four at-bats and notched three RBI. O'Connell knocked a run in on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning and plated two runs on a double in the fifth.
Sophomore SS Sammy Thompson scored three runs in the lead-off position for the Cavaliers in game one. Thompson also tallied two base hits and posted one RBI.
Freshman P Marcelle Crist claimed her fourth win of the season on the mound, allowing one earned run and six hits. Crist lowered her ERA to a team-best 0.70 in the victory.
Freshman P Missy Miller tossed a perfect fifth inning in relief.
The Blue & White trailed 6-3 heading into the top of the seventh inning of game two. Cabrini trimmed its deficit to one run, 6-5, on a one-out bases-loaded two-run single from sophomore Ryan McDonough.
However, senior pinch hitter Kerri MacNeal's pop-up in the infield on the next plate appearance resulted in a game-ending twin-killing as Shookster was doubled up at second base.
O'Connell collected two hits and scored two runs in game two. McDonough also reached base twice on base hits.
Senior P Liz Zimmer suffered the loss in game two, lasting 4.1 innings and surrendering five earned runs. Zimmer struck out two and handed out one walk.
Freshman P Kristin Whitmore and Miller combined to throw 1.2 shutout innings of relief work.
Cabrini (7-5) continues its non-conference regular season slate Thursday, March 25 at Ursinus College. The first pitch of game one will be thrown at 3:30 p.m.
