CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team had its six-game win streak against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) snapped Saturday afternoon in game one against Baptist Bible College, 6-5. However, the Cavaliers salvaged a two-game split with the Defenders, taking the second contest, 7-3.
Cabrini trailed 6-1 after five innings in game one and nearly pulled off a comeback for the second time in two days. The Cavaliers mounted the rally with four runs in the top of the sixth. However, Baptist Bible held off the surge and preserved the one-run victory.
Just 24 hours after overcoming a three-run deficit in the late innings against Centenary College, senior DP Kerri MacNeal sparked the rally with a lead-off single in the sixth. Four batters later, sophomore SS Sammy Thompson's single into centerfield plated two runs.
Freshman Casey O'Connell knocked in two more runs in the next at-bat, pulling Cabrini within one run, 6-5. But, O'Connell was left stranded on third to finish the inning and the Cavaliers left one more runner on base as they bowed out in the seventh frame.
Freshman P Missy Miller started on the rubber for the Blue & White, but lasted only 3.0 innings after allowing eight hits and six earned runs. Rookie P Marcelle Crist came on in relief and tossed 3.0 scoreless frames.
Baptist Bible jumped on Miller early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. The Defenders added two more in the fourth. Senior Renee Korb fanned five batters and was credited with the win.
Baptist Bible plated three runs early again in the first inning of game two. However, that would be the only damage done to senior P Liz Zimmer. Zimmer settled into a groove and pitched her fifth straight complete game, striking out four and surrendering seven hits.
The Cavaliers scored all of their seven runs in their final three plate appearances, beginning with two runs in the fifth. Consecutive doubles from O'Connell and sophomore 3B Ryan McDonough ignited the rally.
Cabrini scored four in the sixth, including the go-ahead run. MacNeal supplied the Cavaliers a lead they would never relinquish with her first homerun of the season and the fourth of her career, a two-run shot that scored senior 2B Cheri Johns.
The Blue & White added an insurance tally in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from junior OF Pam Mechling.
Korb suffered the loss in game two after pitching 3.2 innings of relief. Freshman Katelin Broughton started for BBC and pitched just 2.0 innings.
Cabrini (12-10, 7-1) remains on the road for a doubleheader against local rival and non-conference opponent Widener University on Monday, April 12. Game one versus the Pride is set for a 4 p.m. start.
