ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team extended its win streak to a season-high seven games with an emphatic doubleheader sweep at Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Rosemont College on Tuesday afternoon. The Cavaliers rolled to a 21-0 win in game one before a convincing 15-0 victory in game two.
Cabrini plated 13 runs on 12 hits in its first at-bat of the opening contest. The Cavaliers sent 16 batters to the plate in the inning. Senior P Liz Zimmer and sophomore 3B Ryan McDonough each recorded three RBI. Zimmer plated three runs with two singles, while McDonough cleared the bases with a triple.
Cabrini added two runs in the fourth inning and tallied six runs in the fifth. Freshmen Caitlyn Cummins and Missy Miller each doubled home two runs in the fifth frame.
The Blue & White pounded out 25 hits for the game. The Cavaliers' offense boasted 13 players with at least one hit and one run. Sophomore 1B Angela Shookster crossed home plate four times and also drove in three runs.
Cabrini's 21 runs scored is the program's most since posting 21 in a 21-2 win versus Cedar Crest College on April 2, 2002. The Cavaliers also reached the 20-run plateau against Rosemont on March 14, 2008 (20-0).
Zimmer was credited with the victory, her ninth in nine starts versus CSAC opponents. She tossed 3.0 innings and struck out four before making way for freshman P Marcelle Crist. Crist allowed one hit in 2.0 innings of relief work.
The Blue & White kept the bats going in the second game. Cabrini jumped to a 4-0 lead through two innings before plating 10 runs, all with two outs, in the third. Junior OF Pam Mechling drove in two runs with a base hit and the Cavaliers scored five on bases loaded walks.
Mechling and freshman OF Casey O'Connell each drove in three runs in game two. O'Connell went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Senior DP Kerri MacNeal scored three runs.
Miller earned the victory on the mound, allowing just one hit through 5.0 innings and striking out four.
The doubleheader sweep brings the Cavaliers even and passed the 20-win barrier for the first time under third-year head coach Lisa McGregor. Cabrini last won 20 games or more in 2005 when the team finished 22-17.
Cabrini (21-13, 15-3) continues its final week of the regular season on Friday, April 30 at home against CSAC opponent Neumann University. Game one against the Knights is set for a 2 p.m. start.
