Men's Soccer Stumbles in Season Opener at DeSales University, 3-0

The Cabrini men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at DeSales University its season opener on Wednesday.

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. –
The Cabrini men's soccer team began the regular season for the second straight year versus Freedom Conference opponent DeSales University. Despite out-shooting the Bulldogs and recording more penalty kick attempts, the Cavaliers suffered a 3-0 loss.

Freshman midfielder C.J. Doherty led the Cabrini offense with three shots. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Juhring notched two attempts.

DeSales jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from junior forward Jonathan Balfour in the 15th minute. The Bulldogs added a second tally less than 30 seconds before the intermission when senior midfielder Rusty Helwig beat Cabrini freshman goalkeeper Eric Nowicki at the 44:32 mark.

Junior forward Derek Long netted DeSales' third and final tally in the 81st minute.

The Cavaliers posted 10 shots against the Bulldogs' defense, while DSU scored three goals on seven attempts. Cabrini earned seven corner kicks against just three from DeSales.

DSU sophomore goalkeeper Adam Franczak totaled two saves in more than 85 minutes played for the victory. Nowicki went the distance in his Blue & White debut and registered one stop.

Cabrini (0-1-0) welcomes No. 8 York (Pa.) College to Edith Robb Dixon Field for its 2010 home opener on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
