RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's soccer team captured its second win in as many chances with a 2-0 victory against Commonwealth Conference opponent Widener University on Wednesday afternoon at Edith Robb Dixon Field. Freshman midfielder C.J. Doherty's first career goal turned into the match's eventual game-winning tally.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 1-0 advantage with junior back Anthony Girolamo's second goal of the season in the 33rd minute. With the Pride controlling the ball in front of its own bench, Girolamo swiped possession before carrying down the sideline and ripping a shot attempt just inside the near post from 20 yards out.
Doherty netted the insurance score less than two minutes following. Junior forward Eric Collins earned the assist, corralling a bouncing ball inside the box and setting up Doherty's one-touch tally from just about 10 yards.
Widener cut its deficit to one goal in the 73rd minute when junior midfielder Gareth Cooper beat Cabrini freshman goalkeeper Eric Nowicki to the far post with a low shot from 25 yards away.
However, the Blue & White defense kept the Pride attack at bay for the remainder of the contest. Nowicki totaled five saves for his second consecutive victory.
Junior goalkeeper Ryan Frantz recorded two saves for Widener in the loss. The Pride out-shot the Cavaliers for the match, 12-8.
The Blue & White is now unbeaten against Widener in six matches since the 2005 season.
Cabrini (2-7-0, 1-0-0) remains at Edith Robb Dixon Field for a date with Penn State – Abington on Saturday, Oct. 2. Match time against the Lions is set for 12 p.m.
