RADNOR, Pa. – For the second consecutive match, the Cabrini College men's soccer team lost a game in a heartbreaking fashion. On Saturday, it was a double-overtime loss at Centenary. Today, it was a goal in the final two minutes of play that sent the Cavaliers to a 2-1 defeat at the feet of the visiting Neumann University Knights.
The Cavaliers opened the scoring in the ninth minute when freshman
Matt Sabin headed the ball backwards to a streaking
Eric Collins. The senior deftly chipped the ball to the far left side of the net, just past the outstretched arms of Neumann goalie Bob Mastrillo.
The balance of the first half was played very evenly. Neither team managed to seize the momentum or create true scoring opportunities. The clubs combined for one shot on goal before the break, that being the Collins goal.
Just over four minutes into the second half, the Knights evened the score as sophomore Evan Morgan redirected a Brandon Green pass by Cabrini goalkeeper
Eric Nowicki.
The next 39 minutes of play features back and forth runs for both teams. Each time it looked as though one side had a solid scoring opportunity, the defense tightened up to eliminate the threat. Three of Cabrini's opportunities looked like sure things, but the Cavaliers could not finish the play.
As overtime seemed imminent, the Knights broke the tie. In the 89th minute, Morgan connected with Michael Atallian for the game winner.
The Cavaliers (5-6-1, 1-2 CSAC) will try to break their three game losing skid on Saturday when they host Immaculata University at Edith Robb Dixon Field at 12:00 p.m.
