Widener University Sweeps Softball in Home Opener

RADNOR, Pa. –
The Cabrini softball team opened the home portion of its 2011 regular season schedule on Thursday afternoon, suffering a two-game sweep against Commonwealth Conference opponent Widener University at Cabrini Field. The Pride claimed an 8-0 6-inning victory in game one before a 13-7 win in the night-cap.

Junior 1B Angela Shookster went 2-for-4 at the plate and slammed a pair of two-run home runs in game two. Junior 3B Ryan McDonough also drove in two runs in the day's second contest.

The Cavaliers trailed 2-0 in game two before Shookster launched her first home run of the game over the leftfield fence, tying the contest in the 4th inning, 2-2. However, Widener scored 11 runs over the next three innings en route to their sixth straight win.

The Pride scored four runs in the top of the 7th, including two off a pinch-hit home run from freshman Valarie Perretti. Widener banged out 17 hits in the second game.

Cabrini plated three runs in the bottom half of the 7th with Shookster's second home run, also over the leftfield fence, and a McDonough RBI double.

Sophomore P Missy Miller was credited with the game two loss for the Cavaliers. Widener sophomore P Liz Carpino allowed nine hits and six runs en route to her second win of the season.

Sophomore P Marcelle Crist suffered the loss on the mound for the Blue & White in game one, allowing six earned runs over 5.0 innings of work.

Senior P Kelsey Shultz drove in three runs at the plate and pitched 6.0 shutout innings while striking out nine for the Pride in the first game. Senior Meg Phillips hit a lead-off solo home run and knocked in two runs.

Widener (8-6) scored three runs in the top of the 4th and three more in the top of the 6th to put away the game.

Cabrini (1-7) begins its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule on Friday, March 18 at home against Marywood University. Game one against the Pacers will start at 3 p.m.
