RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team resumed its 2011 regular season non-conference schedule on Tuesday afternoon against Centennial Conference foe Swarthmore College at Cabrini Field. The Garnet claimed a 9-2 victory in game one before rallying late for a 7-1 win in daylight-shortened game two against the Cavaliers.
Swarthmore jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first contest through two at-bats before Cabrini trimmed its deficit to three runs, 5-2, in the bottom of the 2nd frame. Senior RF Pam Mechling and junior 2B Stephanie Campanaro each knocked in a run in game one.
Junior 1B Angela Shookster and senior C Chrissy Squillace each scored a run for the Cavaliers in the game one loss.
However, the Garnet hung three runs in the fifth before adding a final run in the sixth en route to the win. Freshman P Melissa O'Connor pitched 3.1 innings of relief and struck out six to earn the victory.
Sophomore P Marcelle Crist was saddled with the loss for the Blue & White, allowing six earned runs and walking three.
Shookster supplied Cabrini with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st in game two, ringing a two-out RBI double off the left-centefield fence.
The Cavaliers clung to a one-run edge with the support of 4.0 scoreless inning from sophomore P Kristin Whitmore before the Garnet plated four in the 5th inning and three runs in the 6th inning.
Shookster and junior 3B Ryan McDonough each had two hits in the game two loss. Whitmore lasted 6.0 innings and struck out three.
O'Connor also earned the win in game two for Swarthmore, surrendering seven hits and striking out nine.
Cabrini (2-10) resumes its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule on Thursday, March 24 versus Philadelphia Biblical University. Game one against the Crimson Eagles is set for 3 p.m.
