RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College men's soccer team rebounded from Wednesday's loss to DeSales in a big way, rallying to defeat the Eastern University Eagles 2-1 at Edith Robb Dixon Field on Saturday night. The win improves the Cavaliers record to 4-3.
The game was everything that one would expect from two teams separated by about 30 feet of asphalt. The capacity crowd was primed for a match of two evenly paired sides, and the fans got exactly what they wanted.
The first 25 minutes of the game featured back and forth play, both teams feeling each other out and trying to gain momentum. Though both teams have a bit of success in creating scoring chances, Eastern was first to convert a chance into a goal in the 31st minute.
At the break, the Cavaliers trailed 1-0 but narrowly missed on two opportunities, both by freshman
Matt Sabin narrowly bounced over the crossbar.
The Cavaliers came out of the halftime break with renewed vigor and aggressiveness. They seemed to be a step quicker than before the break which led to more offensive opportunities.
Cabrini finally broke through in the 53rd minute when Sabin received the ball deep in the corner and slid a pass through the Eagles' defense, finding senior
Eric Collins for the goal.
With the game tied and the clock winding down, the intensity on the field picked up. Both sides' supporters cheered with every touch of the ball.
In the 77th minute, Collins shooting touch was again in solid form. Collins collected a long pass from junior
Ryan Juhring and with one move fired a shot past Eastern's goalie giving the Blue and White a 2-1 advantage.
The Eagles were not done however. With just under three minutes to play, an Eastern player took a shot that had sights on the back of the net. Senior
Anthony Girolamo was in the right place at the right time to play the ball out of danger.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday when they welcome Marywood University to Edith Robb Dixon Field for a 6:00 p.m. CSAC match.
