Final Shot Downs Men's Basketball at Scranton

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. – In what could be one of the best games of the early season, the Cabrini College men's basketball team found itself on the wrong side of an overtime thriller at the University of Scranton's Long Center.  The No. 12 Royals topped the Cavaliers 74-73 when Cabrini's last second shot bounced off the back of the rim.

Freshman Arron Goodman posted his fourth career double-double, leading the Blue and White with 26 points, including 22 after halftime, and 12 rebounds.  Senior Goran Dulac also posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The No. 21 Cavaliers (3-2) fell behind early as Scranton built a 12-0 lead in the game's first three minutes.  Dulac's lay-up five minutes later capped a Cabrini 15-2 run, giving the Blue and White its first lead of the game at 15-14.  Scranton's Ross Danzig nailed a three pointer to return the lead to the Royals.

But for a brief moment after a lay-up by junior Fran Rafferty, the Royals controlled the scoreboard for the remainder of the opening half.  After 20 minutes, Scranton maintained a slim 34-31 lead.  Dulac paced the Cabrini offense with 11 points and six rebounds in the opening stanza, while Danzig's 13 points led the Royals.

Freshman Brad Fagan's three pointer on Cabrini's first second half possession tied the score at 34, the first of 10 ties in the second half.  While the score remained close, the Blue and White built a pair of five point leads in the final 11 minutes of regulation but could not hold them.  The latest came on a Goodman bucket with 2:49 to play.  Five Scranton points on its next two possessions tied the score at 64 with 1:39 on the clock.

A pair of Goodman free throws with just 20 seconds to play put Cabrini up 66-64 but Scranton's Brendan Boken got free in the paint tying the score with six seconds to play.  Cabrini senior A.J. Williams' three point attempt at the buzzer fell short, sending the game to overtime.

Boken's lay-up gave the Royals a two point lead early in the extra period before Goodman's three pointer grabbed a 69-68 lead for Cabrini.  A Danzig three returned the lead to the Royals.  Williams found Goodman for the rookie's fourth and fifth points of overtime, tying the score for the 12th time.

Danzig split a pair of free throw to take a 72-71 lead.  Cabrini grabbed three offensive rebounds on its next possession, leading to a pair of Rafferty free throws, giving Cabrini a 73-72 lead with 63 seconds remaining in overtime.  The Cavaliers secured a defensive stop but a held ball on the rebound returned the ball to Scranton.  After a Royals' time out, Danzig's floater in the lane found the bottom of the net with just nine seconds to play.  A Cabrini time out gave the Cavaliers a shot at the buzzer but it wasn't to be.

Rafferty, Williams and Knowles joined Goodman and Dulac in double figures with 10 points each.  Rafferty also added eight rebounds, while Williams and Knowles recorded four steals and four assists.

Danzig posted a game high 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Royals (4-0).  Travis Farrell added 14 points, while Boken also posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

The Blue and White will return to action on Monday when it travels to Hackettstown, N.J. to face Centenary College in the Cavaliers' Colonial States Athletic Conference opener.  The action is scheduled to tip at 8:00 p.m.
