RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College softball team split a doubleheader against Immaculata University today at Cabrini Field. The Cavaliers dropped the first game 4-2 before rebounding for a 4-3 win in the second game. Cabrini's record now stands at 4-6 (1-1 CSAC).
The Cavaliers took an early lead in the opener when senior
Angela Shookster's single to left plated fellow senior
Sammy Thompson in the bottom of the first inning.
The Blue and White mustered just two hits over the next five innings, as the Mighty Macs seized the lead. Immaculata tallied a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings.
The Cavaliers went into the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 4-1. After a single by freshman Stephanie Diegel, junior
Missy Miller reached on a fielder's choice. After advancing to third on a passed ball, a single by junior
Lindsey Atzert sent Miller across the plate.
The Blue and White has the bases loaded with two outs in the final frame but could not get the big hit.
Junior
Marcelle Crist suffered the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits in four innings of work. Atzert connected on two of Cabrini's seven hits in the opener.
The second game played very similar to the first, with both teams' pitching controlling the action. Cabrini opened the scoring in the third inning. Junior
Taylor McGarvey worked a walk and advanced to second on a Thompson sacrifice bunt.
Atzert followed with a bunt single before stealing second. Shookster again came up big with a two-RBI single through the left side.
The Mighty Macs evened the score in the top of the fourth inning. The game went to the bottom of the sixth inning with the scored tied at two.
Shookster began the Cabrini rally with a single to right field. Freshman Rebecca Miles then came through with the biggest hit of the day. The rookie hit her first career home run, a two-run shot, giving the Blue and White a 4-2 lead.
The Mighty Macs rallied for one run in the top of the seventh inning and loaded the bases before Miller closed the door.
Sophomore
Bethany Feinberg notched her first win of the season, while Miller posted her first save. Shookster led Cabrini with two hits in the game.
The Cavaliers will hit the road on Saturday to face Gwynedd-Mercy College at 12 Noon for a CSAC doubleheader.
