RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College softball team had its win streak ended at six games, as the Cavaliers suffered a pair of setbacks today against Neumann University.
The 3-2 and 6-4 losses drop the Blue and White to 10-6 in the Colonial states Athletic Conference and 15-15 overall.
The opener turned out to be a pitcher's duel as Cabrini junior
Missy Miller scattered 15 hits, but allowed just three runs, while striking out five Knights. The Cavaliers mustered just one earned run on six hits.
The Cavaliers got an early run as Cabrini's first three batters reached on walks. Freshman Rebecca Miles was inches away from clearing the bases but Neumann's centerfielder make a snow cone catch, robbing Miles of the grand slam. Senior leadoff hitter
Sammy Thompson scored on the fly ball, for an early lead.
The Blue and White added an unearned run in the third inning as junior
Lindsey Atzert scored on senior
Angela Shookster's ground ball through the shortstop's legs.
Neumann tied the score with a pair of runs in the fifth, then plated the game winner in the top of the seventh inning.
The Cavaliers used two double plays to end Neumann scoring threats, but left nine runners on base, including the bases loaded in the sixth inning.
Both teams managed some offense in the early innings of game two. Four first inning base hits led to two Neumann runs. Cabrini responded in the bottom of the frame.
Thompson and Atzert reached on bunts, taking advantage of Neumann miscues to get in scoring position. Senior
Ryan McDonough's single up the middle scored Thompson.
Atzert and McDonough crossed the plate on freshman Stephanie Diegel's single to right field, giving the Blue and White a 3-2 lead.
The Knights reclaimed the lead in the second with three runs on two hits. Cabrini got one back in their half of the second when McDonough knocked in junior
Taylor McGarvey.
The game remained 5-4 until the top of the fourth inning when Neumann's Becca Reinhart hit a solo home run.
The Cavaliers will travel to Scranton, Pa. tomorrow to face Marywood University (13-11, 11-1 CSAC). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
