CHESTER, Pa. – The Cabrini College softball team suffered a pair of one run losses today at Widener University, falling the opener 7-6 in nine innings, before dropping the second 3-2. With the nonconference losses, Cabrini's overall record now stands at 15-19.
The Blue and White struck first in the opener, as freshman Rebecca Miles' double to left field scored junior
Lindsey Atzert in the top of the third inning. Widener responded in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs on four hits.
Cabrini evened the score in the fourth when senior
Ryan McDonough knocked in junior
Taylor McGarvey. The Blue and White regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning as senior leadoff hitter
Sammy Thompson's double down the left field line scored junior
Marcelle Crist and freshman
Lea Enoch.
The Pride took advantage of a Cabrini error and walk to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, sending the game to extra innings.
Two Widener errors in the top of the eighth inning allowed the Cavaliers to score an unearned run, taking a 5-4 lead. The Pride responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth, extending the game.
Once again, the Cavaliers plated a run in the top of the frame. Senior
Angela Shookster's bunt scored Atzert for a 6-5 lead. A Widener double and sacrifice fly sent a pair of runs across the plate for a 7-6 walk off win.
Cabrini opened game two with an unearned run in the top of the first inning as an error on Atzert's triple allowed her to cross the plate.
The Blue and White extended its lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning as McGarvey and Thompson's back-to-back doubles sent another run across the plate.
Three runs on a pair of doubles and three singles gave Widener its first lead of the nightcap. Cabrini got two runners on base in the top of the seventh, but failed to get the big hit to tie the game.
Casey Hargadan led the Pride (18-14) with three hits and three RBI's in the doubleheader.
The Cavaliers will return to Cabrini Field on Thursday to face Delaware Valley College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
