CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – For the second time in less than a week, the Cabrini men's soccer team needed extra time to finish a game. Friday's result was a 1-1 tie with Wesley. Today's result was a little better as the Cavaliers (2-3-1) notched their first road victory of the season, a 2-1 win at DeSales University (3-2-1).
In the final minute of the first overtime period, senior
Kyle Johnson's free kick found the head of sophomore
Christian Martin for the game winner. The goal marked Martin's second game-winner and just the third of his career.
DeSales controlled the first 45 minutes of action, outshooting Cabrini 11-1 before the break. The Bulldogs also forced five first half corner kicks to the Blue and White's two. The Cavaliers, however, were up to the task as junior goaltender
Eric Nowicki's two saves helped keep the score sheet clean.
The Bulldogs finally broke through just seconds after the halftime break as junior Scott Webb converted a rebound for the game's first goal.
It would take over 40 minutes for the Cavaliers to find the equalizer, but find it, they did. With just over four minutes to play in regulation, senior
Anthony Girolamo scored his first goal since October 2, 2010 and the fourth of his career. Girolamo's header came off the first assist of the year for junior
Brett Lockbaum and sophomore
Sean Neary.
DeSales outshot the Cavaliers 12-7 in the second half, but Girolamo's goal gave Cabrini new life. Cabrini continued its momentum into overtime, outshooting DeSales 3-1.
Freshman
Boomer Steigelman recorded five of Cabrini's 11 shots on the day, including two of the six on goal. Nowicki recorded four saves in the win.
The Cavaliers will travel across Eagle Road on Saturday to face rival Eastern University in non-conference action. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
