RANDOR, Pa. – It took 110 minutes but the Cabrini College men's soccer team secured its first point in the standings with a 1-1 tie against Wesley College today at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The game was the first of the 2012 Eagle Road Classic.
The match was a exciting affair that featured 30 shots and 14 corner kicks. The action went end to end as each team fought to secure the game's momentum and ultimately the game winning goal.
The score sheet remained clean through the game's first 44 minutes as neither team could convert the game's first 10 shots. Just as it appeared the clubs would head into halftime scoreless, Wolves senior Josh Chelleh found freshman Derean Hagland for the game's first goal with just 35 seconds to play before the break.
The Cavaliers emerged from the break with a renewed resolve to take control of the game. They continued to work the flanks but could not quite find the right combination to break the Wolverines' defense.
That was until the 72nd minute when the Blue and White tied the score. Freshman
Nick Nikic posted his first career goal when a free kick rebound came to him just outside the 18-yard box. The rookie blasted a shot to the far post upper corner to level the score board at 1. Cabrini held on through a furious Wesley rally to end regulation.
Cabrini's defense was up to the task in the first overtime period as they staved off three Wesley shots and three corner kicks. Cavaliers junior
Brett Lockbaum had an excellent scoring chance with less than on eminute remaining in the period, as he collected a loose ball and fired toward the net, only to be stopped by a great play by a Wesley defender.
The game's final 10 minute period was played as were the first 100 minutes, end to end but neither team could find the back of the net.
While each team secured seven corner kicks, the Blue and White outshot Wesley 17-13. Senior
Anthony Girolamo led the Cavaliers with four shots, including a game-high two on goal.
Junior goaltender
Eric Nowicki posted three saves to secure the tie.
