GWYNEDD, Pa. – The Cabrini College men's basketball team returned to the top of the Colonial States Athletic Conference standings with tonight's 93-80 win at Gwynedd-Mercy College. The Cavaliers' fourth consecutive win improves them to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
Four Cavaliers scored double-figure points, led by senior
Jeremy Knowles' season high 23 points. Sophomore
Aaron Walton-Moss added 21 points and a season high 14 rebounds. Junior
Tim McDaniels added 15 points off the bench, while junior
Fran Rafferty chipped in with 13 points.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead as Knowles scored 10 points in the first 4:15 of the game, handing the Blue and White a 13-9 early lead. The Griffins stormed back to take its first lead of the game with an 11-2 run. Gwynedd-Mercy built its lead to 32-24 with just over four minutes left in the half.
Cabrini cut its deficit back to 32-31 as a pair of McDaniels free throws capped a 7-0 run with 2:12 on the clock. The Cavaliers would not find the bucket over the final minutes of the stanza as the Griffins scored the final nine points of the half, building a 42-32 lead at halftime.
The Blue and White connected on over 46% of their field goal attempts but hit just 3-9 from three point range and committed 10 first half turnovers. Conversely, the Griffins hit 6-9 from deep and dominated the glass, outrebounding Cabrini 22-12, including 10 offensive rebounds.
Cabrini wasted little time getting back in the game as a Rafferty three pointer capped a 14-4 run early in the second half, cutting the Griffins' lead to 50-48 with just under 15 minutes to play. Over the next seven minutes the lead hovered between 1-5 points, but the Cavaliers couldn't get the big basket.
That changed with Walton-Moss' lay-up with nine minutes to play gave the Blue and White its first lead at 64-63. Ninety seconds later, Cabrini took control of the game. With the score tied at 66 with 7:29 to play, junior
Corey Frizzera scored five consecutive points and Cabrini never looked back.
As poorly as the Cavaliers played in the first half was as good as they played in the second. Cabrini shot an astounding 65% from the floor, including 5-9 from deep. The Blue and White committed just three turnovers, while recording 10 assists on its 22 second half field goals.
Cabrini also regained control of the painted area, outscoring the Griffins 30-10 in the lane and secured a 19-12 rebounding advantage.
Justin Knight led the Griffins (8-7, 7-1 CSAC) with 23 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Darnell Artis added 19 points and Frank Champion 16.
The Cavaliers will face another tough test on Saturday as they travel to La Plume, Pa. to face Keystone College (9-6, 6-2 CSAC in a rematch of the 2012 CSAC Championship. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
