Men's Basketball Comeback Falls Short at Keystone

Box Score

La PLUME, Pa. – For the second consecutive game, the Cabrini College men's basketball team trailed by double digits at halftime.  This time, they could not come back as the Blue and White fell to 11-5 with today's 102-87 loss at Keystone College.  The loss drops the Cavaliers to a tie for second place in the CSAC at 7-2.

Four Cavaliers scored in double figures today, led by junior Tim McDaniels' career high 19 points of the bench.  Sophomore Aaron Walton-Moss added 18 points and a season-high 17 rebounds.  Junior Fran Rafferty tallied 17 points and eight rebounds before fouling out and senior A.J. Williams chipped in with 10 points.

The Blue and White fell behind early, as the Giants built a 9-2 lead just under two minutes into play.  Two minutes later, Cabrini's deficit reached double figures at 19-8.  A 27-10 Keystone run put the Giants up 52-28 with 5:41 to play before halftime.  The Cavaliers closed the half on a 14-4 run, cutting Keystone's lead to 58-42 after 20 minutes.

The Giants connected on 59% of their first half field goals to build its lead, including 7-16 from three point range.  Conversely, the Cavaliers found the range on just one of their 12 first half attempts from deep.

The Cavaliers continued to slowly try to chip away at their deficit.  Cabrini got as close as 75-69 with 7:13 on the clock and it looked as though the Cavaliers were mounting a comeback, but turnovers on three consecutive possessions allowed the Giants to make a quick 7-0 run, extending the lead back to 13 points.

Though the Cavaliers shot over 42% from the field and hit just two field goals less than the Giants, Cabrini connected on just 3-26 from the three point line, while Keystone knocked down 9-24.

Today's game also marks the first time since February 27, 2009 in which the Blue and White has surrendered 100 points.  Cabrini lost the 2009 CSAC Championship game to Gwynedd-Mercy 108-96.

Junior Jon Miller chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.  Walton-Moss added a career-high seven assists to his two steals and two blocked shots.  Willams also matched five rebounds with his three steals.

Mike Kelly led Keystone (10-6, 7-2 CSAC) with 28 points, 12 rebounds and four steals in the win.  Duncan Lunsford added 24 points off the bench.   Dan Candemeres posted 17 points, six rebounds and nine assists in the win.

The Cavaliers return to action on Monday when they welcome Baptist Bible College (3-13, 1-8 CSAC) to Nerney Field House.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
