Men's Soccer Season Ends In Penalty Kick Shootout

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Cabrini's bid for a second consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference title came to an end tonight as the Cavaliers took Centenary College to penalty kicks before falling 6-5 in the shootout.  The Blue and White close the season with an overall record 11-7-3, including 7-2 in the CSAC.

Tonight's loss also closes the careers of the Blue and White's seven seniors, Ryan Cerrato, C.J. Doherty, Joe Halbherr, Gabe Kuhn, Brett Lockbaum, Brendan Magerr and Eric Nowicki.  As a group, they have led the Blue and White to 40 victories, including the 2012 CSAC championship.

The group has played a total of 363 matches in the Blue and White and combined and scored 106 points, including 43 goals while earning nine All-CSAC honors and six Academic All-CSAC accolades.   

The Blue and White fell behind in the 40th minute as Centenary's Sean Robinson found the back of the net.  The Cyclones carried the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Cabrini evened the score in the 55th minute as freshman A.J. Bishop got this head on a pass from Lockbaum for the rookie's team-leading 11th goal of the season.  

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the 73rd minute when Lockbaum's pass found freshman Bobby Kane for the rookie's fifth tally of the year.   The Cavaliers held on to its 2- 1 lead until the 86th minute when Centenary's Luis Marin connected on a long distance shot.

The two 10 minute overtime periods were played evenly as the teams combined for just one shot and no corner kicks in the extra periods.  After 110 minutes of action, a berth in the CSAC championship match would come down to a penalty kick shootout.

The Cavaliers fell behind early as they missed on their first two attempts, while the Cyclones connected on their.  The Blue and White regrouped, while Nowicki forced a pair of Centenary missed.  The shootout remained tied at 3-3 through five rounds, sending the shootout to sudden death.

Both teams connected in the sixth round and missed in the seventh.  In the eighth round, Cabrini missed its attempts before Centenary converted its chance, sending the Cyclones to its first CSAC championship match.

Cabrini outshot Centenary 15-10 and held the Cyclones to just three shots on goal on the night.  Kane and Bishop led the Blue and White with three shots each, while Lockbaum added two.  Nowicki recorded one save in the loss.

The Cyclones (11-5-3, 8-1 CSAC) will travel to Scranton on Saturday for the conference championship match where they will face top seed Marywood (13-2-2, 9-0 CSAC).  The Pacers topped Neumann 3-1 in tonight's other semifinal.  Marywood won the teams' regular season match-up 2-1 on October 2.
