RADNOR, Pa. - The Cabrini College men's basketball team extended its win streak to a season high seven games with tonight's 80-68 win over Gwynedd-Mercy at Nerney Field House. With the win, the Blue and White improves to 18-5 overall and 14-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. The victory also secures the top seed in the upcoming CSAC tournament.
Head coach Marcus Kahn relied heavily on his starting five and they responded by each scoring double figures. Senior
A.J. Williams led the way with a game high 17 points on 8-13 shooting. Sophomore
Aaron Walton-Moss narrowly missed a triple double with 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to go with a pair of steals and blocked shots.
Junior
Fran Rafferty opened the game with a three pointer, setting Cabrini on the right path. The game remained close throughout the opening 20 minutes, but the Blue and White never surrendered its lead, as it hovered between 2-7 points.
After 20 minutes, the Cavaliers maintained a slim 34-30 lead. Neither team shot particularly well, both at 37%, but it was Cabrini's rebounding dominance that helped maintain the lead. The Blue and White outrebounded Gwynedd-Mercy 26-17, including 12 offensive rebounds which led to 19 second chance points.
The Cavaliers turned up the pressure after the break, as a pair of Williams lay-ups capped a 7-0 run early in the second half to extend Cabrini's lead to 43-32. Minutes later, senior
Jeremy Knowles found Williams on the break, pushing the lead to a game-high 17 points with just under 13 minutes to play. The Griffins cut their deficit to 10 points a few times in the second half, but each time the Cavaliers immediately responded with a solid offensive possession, getting a bucket or going to the free throw line.
The Blue and White connected on an astounding 69.2% from the field in the second half, as each starter posted at least six second half points.
Rafferty finished the game with 14 points and five rebounds, while Knowles and junior
Jon Miller posted matching 12 point efforts. Knowles recorded three steals and joined Walton-Moss with game high honors on the glass with eight boards.
Senior Brendan Stanton and freshmen Darnell Artis and Shawn Wilson led the Griffins (12-10, 11-4 CSAC) with 13 points each. Senior Frank Champion added 11 points in the loss.
By virtue of the win, the road to the CSAC championship will have to go through Nerney Field House for the fourth consecutive season. As top seed, the Cavaliers will receive a first round bye and host a semifinal round game on Tuesday, February 19. The conference championship game is scheduled for Saturday, February 23.
The Blue and White will return to the court on Saturday as they host local rival Rosemont College (9-13, 4-11) in the second half of a CSAC double dip. Game time is scheduled for approximately 3:00 p.m. following Cabrini's women's game against Marywood University.
Cabrini will also celebrate its men's basketball Senior Day on Saturday. The game will mark the final regular season home game for seniors
