Men's Basketball Returns to Elite 8 with Win at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Cabrini men's basketball team punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight with tonight's 70-63 win at the College of Wooster.  The victory, the Blue and White's 14th in a row, improves the club to 25-5 on the year.

The Cavaliers will face No. 2 Amherst College (27-2) on Friday at the Salem, Va. Civic Center.  The Jeffs advanced with a 93-76 win over Randolph-Macon College.  Game time for Friday's tilt have not yet been announced. 

Sophomore Aaron Walton-Moss led the Blue and White with his fifth consecutive double-double, posting 24 points, 12 rebounds and a career high five steals.  Junior Tim McDaniels added 17 points, while senior Jeremy Knowles scored 10 points off the bench.

The Fighting Scots controlled the game in the early going, building a 14-5 lead less than five minutes into the game.  Wooster's advantage stood at 24-17 at the 10:15 mark when the Cavaliers put together one of its patented runs.  Over the next five minutes, Cabrini went on a 16-0 run.  Seven Cavaliers scored in the spurt, which included a pair of Knowles three pointers.  

Spurred on by its fans, the Scots closed the opening half on an 8-0 run of its own cutting Cabrini's lead to 40-39 at the half.  Walton-Moss posted 15 points and eight boards at the break, while McDaniels nine points help the Cavaliers within reach in the early going.  

Guards junior Doug Thorpe and sophomore Xavier Brown paced Wooster with 12 points each in the opening half, including five of the Scots seven made three pointers in the opening 20 minutes.      

The Scots wasted no time regaining the lead, as they continued their hot shooting from the first half.  Wooster scored the first six points of the half, building a 45-40 lead.  The Blue and White fought back, as Walton-Moss' 15 foot jumper capped a 15-5 run, handing the Cavaliers a 55-50 lead with 10:33 to play.  

Wooster got within three points on two occasions, but the Cavaliers had answers on both occasions.  A lay-up by junior Jon Miller and another Walton-Moss short
jumper immediately returned the advantage to five points.

The Blue and White really turned up its defensive effort in the second half, holding the Scots to just three field goals in the game's final 17 minutes and forcing six turnovers.

Junior Fran Rafferty added nine points and nine rebounds.  Miller finished with six points and six boards.

Thorpe led three Scots (24-6) in double figures with 21 points.  Brown added 17 points and seven rebounds.  Sophomore Kenny DeBoer tallied 10 points and six rebounds, while senior Josh Claytor posted nine points and 10 boards.

The victory offered the Cavaliers some pierce of retribution as Cabrini's 2011 campaign came to an end in Wooster's Timken Gymnasium.  The Scots topped the Blue and White 94-77 in the Sweet 16, as Wooster advanced to the NCAA championship game.

Amherst qualified for Friday's national quarterfinal round after a dominant performance against Randolph-Macon.  The Jeffs connected on nearly 65% from the floor in the first half, en route to a 58-34 halftime lead.  Four Jeffs reached double figure points, led by Aaron Toomey's 25, to go with his six boards and eight assists.  Allen Williamson added 15 points on 6-8 shooting, while Connor Green knocked down four three pointers among his 14 points off the bench.
