LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cabrini College softball team extended its win streak to five games and improved to a perfect 5-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference with today's sweep over the Cairn University Highlanders. The 7-2 and 3-1 road victories improve the Blue and White to 5-4 overall.
The Cavaliers grabbed control of the opener in the second inning, as four runners crossed the plate. Sophomore Steph Diegel opened the frame with a double and advanced to third on a single by junior Bethany Feinberg. Sophomore Jessica Irvin's single plated Diegel, before Feinberg scored on a wild pitch. Freshman Kaitlyn Cooper's single scored Irvin and junior Jennifer Ciambriello.
Cabrini added three runs in the top of the third as sophomore Becca Miles' bases loaded double knocked in Irvin and freshman Molly McDougall and Katie Hall. Cairn added singles runs in both the fourth and seventh innings.
Diegel led the Blue and White with three hits, while McDougall, Cooper and Irvin added two base hits each. Feinberg notched her second career victory after surrendering just one earned run on five hits. The junior posted a career best six strike outs in the complete game victory.
The Cavaliers took an early lead in the nightcap as the Blue and White plated all three of its runs in the top of the second inning. Diegel again opened the inning with a single, before swiping second and third bases. The sophomore scored on Cambriello's single. Later in the frame, Irvin's two RBI double sent junior Missy Miller and Ciambriello across the plate.
That was all of the offense Miller needed to secure the win. The junior hurler stymied the Highlander offense, holding it to just one run. Cairn's run came in the seventh as four consecutive singles posted a run and left the bases loaded. Miller ended the rally, recording a pair of strike outs and groundout to second base to kill the rally.
Cairn outhit Cabrini 9-7, including two each Cooper and Diegel, but Miller allowed just one run and posted a career high eight strikeouts to secure her second win of the year.
The Blue and White will look to continue its current streak on Saturday as it pays a visit to Baptist Bible College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
