LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cabrini College softball team extended its win streak to seven games and improved to 7-4 after today's sweep of the Baptist Bible College Defenders. The 3-1 and 9-4 victories also improve the club to a perfect 7-0 in Colonial States Athletic Conference. The seven game win streak matches the program's longest since another seven game spurt late in the 2010 campaign.
Senior Marcelle Crist tossed another gem in the opener, leading the Cavaliers to a 3-1 victory. The senior scattered six hits over seven innings, allowing one earned run and striking out six. Freshman Amber Kachelries matched Crist pitch for pitch, as the rookie allowed three runs, none earned and also recorded six punch outs.
Both teams recorded hits in the first four innings, but the Cavaliers were first to cross the plate in the top of the fifth as senior Lindsey Atzert singled before advancing two bases and scored as freshman Kaitlyn Cooper reached on a Baptist Bible error. The Defenders evened the score in the bottom of the frame as senior Karin Mowry deposited the Crist offering over the wall in right center field.
Cabrini took advantage of a pair of Defenders' miscues in the top of the seventh inning to put the game away. After reaching on an error, freshman Molly McDougall crossed the plate on a single by sophomore Becca Miles. The next batter, fellow sophomore Steph Diegel reached on a second error, allowing Cooper to touch home. Crist set the Defenders down one, two, three in the bottom of the seventh to close the game.
The Blue and White had the bats going in game two, as it knocked out 13 hits by eight players and scored seven earned runs en route to the 9-4 win. Five Cavaliers posted a pair of base knocks each, while senior Missy Miller improved to 3-2 and lowered her ERA to 1.31, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits n the complete game.
The Cavaliers struck first, plating a run in the top of the first inning. Atzert recorded her first double of the season before scoring as Miles reached on an error. A leadoff triple in the bottom of the frame allowed Baptist Bible to level the score after the first. Cabrini capitalized on a pair of BBC outfield errors, as freshman Katie hall crossed the dish.
The Blue and White offense remained hot as it tallied another run in the third when Diegel's single to centerfield plated Cooper. The Defenders cut Cabrini's lead back to 3-2 after three innings, taking advantage of a pair of Blue and White errors in the frame to score an unearned tally.
Cabrini broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning with four runs on five hits. Cooper opened the frame with her first career home run. After loading the bases, Hall clubbed a double to score Diegel and junior Bethany Feinberg. Sophomore Jessica Irvin's groundout allowed Crist to cross the dish, extending Cabrini's lead to 7-2.
The Cavaliers added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning as Miles' single scored Atzert before Diegel's groundout plated Cooper. Baptist Bible added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but it was too little too late.
Cabrini will look to continue its streak on Wednesday as it visits Notre Dame (Md.) for a CSAC make-up game. The game was originally slated for March 16, as the second half of a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Hartford Community College in Bel Air, Md.
