Softball Struggles in Season-Opening Losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Cabrini College softball team dropped its first two regular season games of its 2013 slate on Tuesday, falling to Penn State Harrisburg 2-0 and Eastern University 5-0 in Myrtle Beach.  The Cavaliers will look to rebound on Wednesday as they face Randolph College and King's College.

The Blue and White fell behind in the opener as freshman Rachel Fischer took senior pitcher Missy Miller over the outfield wall for an early 1-0 Penn State Harrisburg lead.  Cabrini had its chances to level the score in the first and second innings.

In the bottom of the first, senior Lindsey Atzert reached on a bunt single, moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a Taylor McGarvey sacrifice.   The Cavaliers couldn't find the big hit, stranding Atzert at third for the final two outs of the frame.

The Blue and White had runners on first and second with no outs in the second inning after a single by Steph Diegel and Stacie Roller walk.  But three consecutive strike outs stranded the duo.  A pair of Penn State doubles in the top of the seventh inning put the game away for the Lions (2-1).

Atzert recorded two of the Cavaliers' three hits on the game.  Miller suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings, while recording three strikeouts against no walks.

Gabrielle Wolfe and Alisha House recorded two base knocks each for Penn State Harrisburg.  Kara Boyd slowed Cabrini's offense, posting 11 strike outs in seven innings of action.

The Blue and White then moved on to face local rival the Eastern University Eagles, in the first of three games over the next eight days.  Both teams struggled to find their offense in the early innings, as sophomore Kaitlyn Cooper's double was the only base hit in the game's first three innings.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the fourth with a single run on three base hits.  A nice defensive play from freshman Katie Hall to Diegel to catcher Becca Miles helped keep the deficit at 1-0.

The Cavaliers threatened in the bottom of the fourth as Cooper and Miles reached second and third bases with just one out, before a line out and strike out ended the threat.  Eastern added a second run in the fifth before blowing the game open in the sixth inning.  Eastern freshman Ashley Siegman's triple down the right field line plates two Eagles, before Siegman scored on an RBI groundout.

Cooper finished the game with two of Cabrini's three hits.  Senior Marcelle Crist suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs, while striking out four Eagles and walking three.

Kasey Williams posted two of Eastern's (2-2) seven base hits. Janelle Fair scored the victory after allowing just three hits and striking out eight.
