Softball Drops Two to Widener, 6-0 and 12-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RADNOR, Pa. -  The Cabrini softball team fell to 10-16 on the year after today's 6-0 and 12-3 nonconference losses to the visiting Widener University Pride.  Sophomore Steph Diegel and freshman Kaitlyn Cooper led the Blue and White offense with three hits each on the day.

The opener opened as a pitcher's duel.  Cabrini's senior hurler Marcelle Crist had her good stuff in the pitcher's circle.  The senior held the Pride to just three hits through the first five innings, not allowing a player to reach third base.

Widener junior Jackie Korang matched Crist zero for zero.  The Cavaliers threatened in the bottom of the first as Cooper and Diegel singled, but Korang ended the rally.  The Blue and White remained hitless until Cooper's infield single to open the fourth, but the rookie was again stranded.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when Widener exploded for six runs on seven hits with a two out rally.  Cabrini's attempted rally fell short as only Crist could find her way on base over the final two frames.

Cooper recorded two of Cabrini's four base knocks in the opener.  Crist fell to 5-8 on the year after allowing six earned runs on 11 hits.

The Cavaliers hoped to get on the board early in the night cap, and that is exactly what they did.  Senior Lindsey Atzert led off the frame with a double to right center and scored on Cooper's single to left.  The Pride wasted little time taking the lead as they plated three runs in the second and two more in the third, building a 5-1 lead after three innings.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when the Blue and White mounted a rally.  With two outs, Atzert and fellow senior Taylor McGarvey drew walk before freshman Katie Hall loaded the bases with a single to left.  Diegel's single scored Atzert and McGarvey crossed the plate on a bases loaded walk to sophomore Becca Miles.  The rally ended with a fly out, leaving the bases loaded.

The Pride added a run in the top of the sixth before really breaking it open in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs on six hits.

Atzert and Diegel accounted for four of Cabrini's eight hits in the night cap, while Atzert crossed the place twice.  Senior Missy Miller suffered the loss after surrendering 10 earned runs on 14 hits.

The Cavaliers will return to CSAC play on Wednesday as they visit Neumann University.  First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3:00 p.m.
