ASTON, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team fell to 10-18 on the season and 9-7 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference today, after falling to the Neumann University Knights. After losing the opener 9-0, the Cavaliers narrowly missed handing the Knights their first conference defeat, ultimately falling 6-5.
The Blue and White looked as if it was going to grab an early lead as seniors Lindsey Atzert and Taylor McGarvey opened the game with back to back infield singles. Unfortunately, both were stranded and the game would be out of hand before the Cavaliers mounted another threat.
The Knights got on the board with a pair of runs in the second then blew the game open with seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third inning.
With their opportunities dwindling, Cabrini looked to mount a rally in the fourth. With two outs, senior Marcelle Crist drew a walk before junior Bethany Feinberg singled to left center. Freshman molly McDougall's single loaded the bases, but again the Blue and White failed to record a big hit to continue the inning.
The Cavaliers' final rally attempt came in the top of the fifth inning, as Atzert led off the frame with a double. Sophomore Becca Miles drew a free pass but a fielder's choice and strikeout ended the game.
Atzert led the Cavaliers with a 3-3 effort with a double and stolen base. Fellow senior Missy Miler suffered the loss, surrendering nine earned runs on 12 hits.
Cabrini fell behind early in the night cap, as Neumann plated individual runs in each of the first three innings. The Blue and White took its first lead of the afternoon in the fifth as it exploded for five runs.
Miles reached on an error and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by sophomore Steph Diegel. An infield single by Crist loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman Katie Hall's single advanced everyone one bag, scoring Miles. After a fly out, McDougall recorded an RBI when she was hit by a pitch. Atzert's single to center sent Crist across the plate, tying the score at 3-3. McGarvey gave the Cavaliers the lead with a two RBI single down the right field line, scoring McDougall and Hall.
Neumann wasted little time regaining the advantage, as it posted three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the fourth. The Cavaliers struggled in its final three at bats, recording just one hit in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Diegel recorded two of the Blue and White's six hits in the night cap, while McGarvey posted a pair of RBI. Crist suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs on 12 hits.
Cabrini will return to action on Friday, when Centenary College visits Cabrini Field. First pitch for the CSAC doubleheader is slated for 3:00 p.m.
