RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College softball team had its seven game win streak snapped today, as it suffered its first Colonial States Athletic Conference losses to Gwynedd-Mercy College. The 5-1 and 9-1 home-opening losses drop the Blue and White to 7-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
The early inning of the opening game had the makings of a pitcher's duel. The Griffins opened the scoring in the top of the first but the Cavaliers answered in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore
Steph Diegel singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior
Bethany Feinberg. Junior pitcher
Marcelle Crist bounded a double off the right field fence, sending Diegel across the plate.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 through the fifth inning as Crist and Gwynedd-Mercy hurler Ashley Lamont combined to allow just three hits between the third and fifth innings. The Griffins reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth, as it took advantage of a Cabrini error, a hit batter and two base knock to score a pair of runs. The Griffins iced the win with two runs on four base knocks in the top of the seventh, as the Cavaliers struggled to generate a late scoring chance.
The Cavaliers mustered six hits in the opener, including two each by Diegel and Crist. Both, along with freshman
Kaitlyn Cooper, also posted doubles in the loss. The loss drops Crist to 3-3 in the pitcher's circle, as the senior allowed five earned runs on 12 hits, while striking out seven batters.
The Blue and White looked to rally in the second game, hoping for the split but the Griffins would allow no such outcome. Gwynedd-Mercy was focused at the plate from senior
Missy Miller's first pitch of the game, as the Griffins recorded hits in six of the seven frames.
Cabrini fell behind in the second as Gwynedd-Mercy built an early 3-0 lead. The Cavaliers managed to load the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn't come through with the big hit. The third inning opened with a scare as the first hitter of the inning hit a line drive back through the box, hitting Miller in the head. With both teams reeling, Miller took a few minutes to regain her wits before returning to the field. The Griffins added insult to injury, as they doubled their lead with three runs in the inning.
After two Gwynedd-Mercy runs in the fourth, the Cavaliers finally pushed a run across in the bottom of the frame. Back to back singles by sophomore
Becca Miles and Diegel, followed by a Crist walk, loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout and fielder's choice, Diegel managed to score on a wild pitch.
Diegel and senior
Lindsey Atzert accounted for four of Cabrini's seven hits in the loss. Miller joined Crist with a 3-3 mark in the pitcher's circle, after surrendering five earned runs on 16 hits.
The Cavaliers will look to return to the win column as they welcome Eastern University (5-13, 0-6 Freedom) to Cabrini Field for a nonconference doubleheader tomorrow. Cabrini fell to Eastern 5-0 in Myrtle Beach during Spring Break. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
