Softball Closes Regular Season With Sweep at Cedar Crest

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team closed its regular season with a flurry, scoring four consecutive conference wins, including today's 2-1 and 9-1 victories at Cedar Crest College. The wins improve the Blue and White to 13-9 in CSAC action and 14-20 overall.

Today's doubleheader also marked a special day in the life of Lia, a young lady who is suffering from a life-threatening illness.  The games and performance by recording artist Christian Porter raised money for the Dreams Come True, a non-profit organization that helps grant dreams for children fighting life-threatening diseases.

Proceeds from today's events will help achieve Lia's dream of taking a Disney cruise with her family.  Lia was on-hand for the games, participating in pregame ceremonies and throwing out the first pitch.

The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead in the first inning.  Senior Lindsey Atzert reached on a Cedar Crest error and advanced to second on the play.  The senior moved to third on a fielder's choice by fellow senior Taylor McGarvey.  Sophomore Steph Diegel's single scored Atzert for an early 1-0 lead.

The Cavaliers added another run in the third, as Cooper and Diegel opened the frame with singles.  Sophomore Becca Miles knocked in what would become the winning run with a single of her own.

After a Falcons run in the bottom of the third, the pitchers took over.  Cabrini senior hurler Missy Miller and Cedar Crest senior Natalia Dial combined to allow just five hits over the final four innings of play.

Though both pitchers recorded matching stat lines, scattering eight hits over seven innings, allowing one earned run each, Miller improved to 6-9 on the year.  Diegel and Miles combined for five of the Cavaliers' eight hits in the win.

The Blue and White combined solid pitching and hitting performances in the nightcap.  Cabrini opened the scoring in the second inning as Miles scored on freshman Katie Hall's first career triple.  Hall crossed the plate on junior Bethany Feinberg's single, giving the Cavaliers an early 2-0 lead.

That was all the cushion senior pitcher Marcelle Crist needed.  The Falcons plated a single run in the bottom of the third, but recorded just two base hits in the five inning game.

The Cabrini offense really went to work in the fourth inning, putting the game out of reach.  Diegel led off the frame with a double, followed by a Miles single.  Crist's single scored Diegel.  Feinberg drew a walk, loading the bases with one out before sophomore Jessica Irvin's single knocked in Miles.

Atzert's single scored Crist and Feinberg.  Two batters later, freshman Kaitlyn cooper got into the act, as her doubled plated two more runs.  Diegel, who led off the inning, closed the scoring with an RBI single to score Cooper.  In total, 10 batters stepped to the plate in the fourth inning, as the Blue and White posted seven earned runs on seven hits.

Crist recorded her sixth win of the season, after allowing two or less earned runs in each of her last three starts.  Diegel and Miles led the Cavaliers with two base hits each, while Atzert and Cooper knocked in two runs each.

The Cavaliers must now await the results of other CSAC games on the final weekend of the season to learn their postseason fate.
