Softball Splits a Pair Against Eastern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team got some measure of revenge for an early season loss today, as the Blue and White split a nonconference doubleheader against Eagle Road rival Eastern University.  The Cavaliers took the opener 8-3 before falling 8-5 in the nightcap.   The split leaves the Cavaliers with an overall record of 8-7.

Eastern took an early lead, plating a run in the top of the first inning off senior starting pitcher Missy Miller.  The Cavaliers wasted no time rallying in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of an Eastern error.  Freshman Kaitlyn Cooper singles to left and advanced to third as sophomore Steph Diegel reached on the error.  Cooper crossed the plate on a wild pitch before sophomore Becca Miles scored Diegle with a single to left.

The Cavaliers maintained their 2-1 lead until the fourth inning when Eastern regained the lead with a pair of unearned runs.  The Blue and White again was up to the task, as Miles clubbed her second home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth.

Cabrini began to break the game open in the fifth as Miles' single to center field scored Cooper and senior Marcelle Crist, giving the Cavaliers a 5-3 lead.  The Blue and White sealed the win in the sixth inning when Cooper's single plated senior Lindsey Atzert.  Cooper, the next batter, scored Cooper and Crist with a two RBI double to left center.

Miles led the Blue and White with a 4-4 performance with four RBI.  Cooper tallied three base knocks and scored three runs.  Miller improved to 4-3 after allowing just one earned run on five hits and striking out six.  The senior allowed just one hit over the final three innings to seal the win.

The Eagles took an early in the nightcap as well, posting a two-run homer in the opening frame.  Cabrini got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Cooper's infield single scored Atzert, who opened the inning with a bunt single.

Eastern broke the game open in the top of the fourth as it took advantage of four Cabrini errors to score six runs, three of them unearned.  Cabrini didn't waste much time trying to get back into the game, as it crossed the plate three times in the bottom of the fourth.  After a single by sophomore Jessica Irvin, Diegel hit her first round tripper of 2013, a two-run shot over the left field wall.  Later in the inning, freshman Stacie Roller hit her first career triple, scoring Crist.

The Cavaliers remained behind 8-4 until the seventh, when Atzert's single plated fellow senior Taylor McGarvey.

Seven Cavaliers recorded at least one base hit in the loss, led by Atzert's two.  Crist suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs on eight hits and striking out six.

The Blue and White will return to conference play on Saturday as the Keystone College Giants pay a visit to Cabrini Field.  First pitch of the CSAC doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
