Softball Swept at Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team fell to 8-9 on the season and 7-4 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference after today's 8-0 and 10-5 losses at Immaculata University. 

The Cavaliers struggled to find its offense in the opener, as it mustered just three hits.  The Mighty Macs jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the second inning.   Cabrini threatened in the to of the third as senior Taylor McGarvey and sophomore Steph Diegel singled, but the rally fell short.

The Mighty Macs added a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning, before ending the game in the fifth, scoring three runs on a pair of doubles.

McGarvey tallied two of Cabrini's three hits.  Senior Marcelle Crist suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs on eight hits.

The Blue and White bats woke up in the second half, as the Cavaliers recorded a season-high 15 hits.  Cabrini got off to a great start as senior Lindsey Atzert and McGarvey reached on infield singles before freshman Kaitlyn Cooper's single scored Atzert.  Immaculata responded immediately, scoring three unearened runs off two Cabrini errors.

The Cavaliers loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning, but could not come through with the big hit.  Cabrini threatened again in the third inning as sophomore Becca Miles and Crist reached on singles but a pair of ground balls squashed the rally.

The big hit came in the fourth inning as the Cavaliers reclaimed the lead.  Freshman Stacie Roller opened the frame with a double down the left field line, advancing to third on a single by sophomore Jessica Irvin.  Atzert's single to center scored Roller.  After a sacrifice bunt by McGarvey, Cooper plated Irvin with a sacrifice fly.  Dieglel's single back through the box scored Atzert, giving the Blue and White a 4-3 lead.

The advantage was short lived as Immaculata responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, including a three run homer.  The Mighty Macs extended their lead in the fifth inning, when a two run home run ended the day for senior hurler Missy Miller.  The Cavaliers mustered one more run in the sixth inning, as Cooper's single scored Atzert.

All nine position players recorded at least one hit for Cabrini, led by Atzert's three hits and three runs scored.  Cooper tallied a season high three RBI in the loss.  Miller fell to 4-4 on the season, after allowing six earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.  Junior Bethany Feinberg allowed an earned run on three hits in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Cavaliers will look to get back in the win column tomorrow when they welcome the Keystone College Giants (8-12, 1-5 CSAC) to Cabrini Field.  First pitch for the CSAC doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
