RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team had its three game win streak snapped today, as it dropped both games of a doubleheader to Eastern University. With the nonconference losses, the Cavaliers fall to 4-9 on the season.
Cabrini got off to a great start in the opener, as freshman
Amber Dietrich led off the game with her fourth home run of the year. Unfortunately, it was the only hit the Blue and White would record until the sixth inning.
Eastern took full advantage, plating runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to build a 6-1 lead. The Cavaliers looked to rally as it batted in the top of the sixth inning.
Dietrich and freshman
Lindsay Savar opened the frame with back to back singles before advancing on a groundout. Dietrich scored on junior
Steph Diegel's sacrifice fly to right field and Savar advanced to third base. Junior
Becca Miles plated Savar with a single to right, cutting the deficit to 6-3.
Cabrini held Eastern scoreless in the bottom of the frame, but went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to end the game.
The Blue and White mustered just four hits in the game, including two by Dietrich. The freshman also scored twice and tallied an RBI. Freshman
Kiley Sharp suffered the loss after allowing nine hits and five earned runs.
In the nightcap, the Cavaliers opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Savar singled before advancing to third on sophomore
Kaitlyn Cooper's double to right center. Both scored on Diegel's RBI single to left center. Freshman pitcher
Taylor Gallagher helped her cause with an RBI single through the right side, scoring Diegel for a 3-0 advantage.
Again, Cabrini's offense began to struggle, as the Cavaliers recorded just five hits over the next five innings. Meanwhile, Eastern chipped away at the Blue and White lead, using a three run third inning to build a 5-3 lead. Cabrini threatened in the top of the fifth inning, loading the bases with two outs, before a fielder's choice ended the inning.
Trailing 7-3 with just three outs remaining, Cabrini mounted a comeback. Savar, Cooper and Diegel recorded three consecutive doubles, scoring Savar and Cooper to cut the deficit to 7-5. The Cavaliers' rally fell short as Diegel was stranded at second.
Diegel finished the nightcap 4-4 with three RBI. Savar added three hits and two runs scored, while Cooper tallied a pair of base knocks and scored twice. Gallagher surrendered six earned runs on 12 hits and struck out two.
The Cavaliers return to CSAC play on Wednesday when they visit Keystone College (3-7, 0-2 CSAC). First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
