Box Score 2 SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team rallied from a tough loss to score a 5-4 win over Immaculata in an elimination game to advance to Saturday's games at the 2014 Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament. The Blue and White opened the day with a 1-0 loss to top seeded Marywood before improving to 24-16 on the season.
Cabrini freshman
Kiley Sharp and Marywood's Lindsey Gibbs locked in a pitcher's duel in the day's second game. Sharp surrendered one unearned run through six innings of work, scattering six hits with five punch outs. Gibbs struck out 11 Cavaliers in her complete game three hitter.
The Cavaliers posted the game's first threat in the second inning, as junior
Becca Miles doubled to lead off the inning before getting stranded at third.
After three perfect innings, Sharp surrendered a lead-off triple to Marywood's Diana Butash, who crossed the plate on a Cabrini error. The Pacers then put two more runners on base before Sharp ended the innings. Cabrini was never able to mount a late scoring opportunity, as it managed just one base runner in the top of the seventh inning.
Freshman
Natalie Giannascoli recorded two of the Blue and White's three base knock to go with Miles' double.
The loss meant that the Cavaliers would immediately face Immaculata and two-time CSAC Pitcher of the Year Meagan Fitzgerald in the tournament's first elimination game.
The Cavaliers showed no fear as it plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman
Lindsay Savar singled and scored on a double to centerfield by junior
Steph Diegel. Diegel then crossed the plate on a Miles single. The Mighty Macs responded immediately with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first.
Cabrini regained the lead in the second, as freshman
Amber Dietrich's single to right centerfield scored fellow rookie
Taylor Mack. Again, the lead was short lived as Immaculata evened the score in the bottom of the frame.
Immaculata chased Cabrini starter freshman
Taylor Gallagher in the third inning, as it scored the go ahead run. The Cavaliers trialed 4-3 until the sixth inning until the Blue and White used small ball to even the score.
Giannascoli opened the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Leah Enoch. The freshman moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Mack single through the right side.
While Sharp, who relieved Gallagher shut down the Mighty Mac offense, the Blue and White had a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh. Miles and Sharp reached base with two outs before the rally fell short.
After a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, Cabrini had another shot at the win. Enoch led off the inning with a walk before advancing to second on a Mack sacrifice fly. With two outs, Savar's single to centerfield scored Enoch from second for the game winning run. Sharp then surrendered a two out walk in the bottom of the eighth but forced a ground ball out to end the game.
Savar and Miles recorded three base hits each in the win, while five Cavaliers recorded an RBI. Sharp was just that in her third relief appearance, scattering four hits over 5.2 scoreless innings.
The Cavaliers will return to the diamond on Saturday morning at 10 a.m., as it will face the loser of Friday's final game between top seed Marywood and second seed Neumann.
