Box Score 2 SCRANTON, Pa. – Cabrini's run to a Colonial States Athletic Conference title fell short today, as the Cavaliers suffered a 3-2 loss to top seed Marywood University in today's Championship Round. The Blue and White scored a 7-3 win over second seed Neumann this morning to advance to the title game.
The loss ends the Cavaliers' season 25-17, tying the 2010 club for most wins since 2004 and marking just the seventh 25 win campaign in program history. The 25 victories are also an 11 win improvement over the 2013 club that finished 14-20.
The loss also closes the career of senior
Jennifer Ciambriello, Cabrini's lone senior. Through her career Ciambriello appeared in 48 games with eight hits and four RBI, while helping the Blue and White post 60 victories.
After scoring a 5-4 eight inning victory over Immaculata in yesterday's elimination game, the Cavaliers faced another tough elimination game against the Knights this morning. While Cabrini had lost 17 consecutive games to Neumann, it could draw strength after defeating the Knights 5-3 in early April.
Cabrini fell behind early as Neumann plated solo runs in each of the first two innings. The Cavaliers got on the board in the top of the third inning, as freshman
Amber Dietrich doubled to left before scoring on a single through the left side by fellow rookie
Lindsay Savar. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Cooper stepped to the plate and put Cabrini in the lead with a two run homer to left field, her seventh of the season.
The Blue and White extended its lead to 4-2 in the sixth as freshman
Taylor Mack's double down the right field line scored sophomore
Molly McDougall. The Cavaliers added insurance runs in the top of the seventh, as it loaded the bases with no outs before Cooper scored on a passed ball. Freshman
Natalie Giannascoli singled to centerfield to score junior
Steph Diegel. Sophomore
Lea Enoch added an RBI sac fly to right, scoring junior
Becca Miles.
Cooper paced the offense in the win, going 3-4 with two RBI and two runs. Freshman
Kiley Sharp scattered 11 hits and two earned runs to earn her seventh win in her last eight decisions.
The victory sent the Cavaliers to the championship round, in which they would have to beat Marywood twice to earn the title. After dropping their regular season games 16-2 and 10-2, Cabrini played the Pacers to a 1-0 loss on Friday, surrendering just an unearned run.
The Pacers jumped ahead in the first inning, as it took advantage of two Cabrini errors to build a 2-0 lead. The Blue and White began to ship away in the second, as Miles led off the inning with a double before scoring on freshman
Taylor Gallagher's single to left center. The Cavaliers evened the score in the third as Miles' sacrifice fly plated Dietrich.
Marywood took advantage of Cabrini's fifth error of the game, scoring the eventual game winning unearned run in the bottom of the fifth.
Dietrich recorded a 3-4 outing, while Cooper and Gallagher added two base hits each. Gallagher, who started the game, and Sharp, who threw two innings in relief, were solid in the circle. The duo allowed six hits and no earned runs, while striking out three and surrendering one walk.
