RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini volleyball team sent its seniors out with a bang tonight, as the Cavaliers topped Gwynedd Mercy University 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-14).
The win extended the Blue and White's Colonial States Athletic Conference win streak to 34 matches and improved the club to 18-6 overall and 8-0 in league play.
Prior to tonight's action, Cabrini Director of Athletics and Recreation Brad Koch presented a plaque to head coach Eric Schaefer commemorating his 200th career victory earlier this month.
The attention then turned to the Blue and White's Class of 2016, Jen Grenauer, Christine Ingargiola, Cassidy Koenig and Harlee Scanlan. Among the most successful classes in program history, the ladies have led the Cavaliers to 93 victories, including the 2013 and 2014 CSAC titles.
As a group, they have combined for 1,590 kills, 3,908 assists, 1,276 digs and 260 total blocks.
The Blue and White took a couple of minutes to find their mojo in the opening set, before eight consecutive points extended an 8-5 lead into a 15-5 cushion midway through the opening set. Another 5-0 spurt later in the
set sealed the win.
Cabrini built an 8-2 lead early in the second set and never looked back. The lead grew to as large as 22-12 late in the second set.
After surrendering the first two points of the third set, Scanlan served the Blue and White to an insurmountable 8-2 advantage. The Griffins pulled to within 10-8 before Cabrini reeled off 10 of 12 points and a 20-10 lead.
Ingargiola led the Cabrini offense with 13 kills, while Koenig tallied 35 assists. Grenauer earned eight kills, one more than sophomore Nicole Sokolovich. Scanlan and Sokolovich also added four service aces each.
Junior Kelly Guarino recorded a match-high 18 digs, while Scanlan added 10.
Senior Brianna Greer led Gwynedd Mercy (9-18, 5-4 CSAC) with six kills, while junior Laura Kirk scored 14 digs and sophomore Lauren Martin 14 assists.
The Cavaliers will hit the road on Thursday for an unusual doubleheader. Cabrini will travel to Clarks Summit, Pa. to face Summit University (3-20, 2-7 CSAC) at 4 p.m., then head to La Plume, Pa. at 7 p.m. where it will meet Keystone College(17-4, 7-1 CSAC).
