GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Cabrini volleyball team saw its six match win streak come to an end today, as the Cavaliers suffered a pair of losses at the Rowan University Quad.
The Cavaliers suffered a 3-1 loss to the University of Scranton in its first match of the day, before falling to New York University 3-2. The defeats dropped the Blue and White to 21-8 on the season.
Senior
Jen Grenauer entered the Cabrini record book in the second match, as the senior became just the fourth Cavalier volleyball student-athlete to record 1,000 career kills. Grenauer joined Danielle Carrozza (1,143), Stephanie Recklau (1,018) and Alexis Doss (1,009) as the only Cavaliers to reach the career milestone.
Fellow senior
Cassidy Koenig became just the ninth actve student-athlete in Division III to record 4,000 career assists. After today's matches, Koenig, the program's career asists leader, now has 4,023 career helpers.
The Blue and White took the opening set from Scranton 26-24 before the Lady Royals claimed the next three frames 25-17, 25-22, 25-14.
Four Cavaliers tallied at least seven kills in the opener, led by sophomore
Nicole Sokolovich. The sophomore notched her ninth double-double of the campaign with 10 kills and 13 digs. Grenauer added nine kills, while sophomores
Anne-Marie Jones and
Chelsea Jones notched seven kills each.
Koenig also tallied a double-double, scoring 37 assists and 11 digs to go with her two service aces. Junior
Kelly Guarino posted 20 digs and two service aces, while junior
Christine Ingargiola added five kills and four blocks.
Kristin Kirwan paced the Lady Royals (23-9) with 16 kills and 10 digs.
The Blue and White's struggles continued into the second match of the day, as NYU scores 25-14 and 25-21 wins in the opening two sets. Head coach
Eric Schaefer refocused his charges, as Cabrini evened the match with 25-23 and 25-12 victories in the third and fourth sets.
Cabrini built a slim lead early in the fifth set before the Violets rallied to take an 8-6 lead. The clubs alternated points before a Blue and White attack error put NYU ahead 13-10.
The Cavaliers scored four of the next five points to even the score at 14-14, but a Cabrini attack error and NYU kill gave the Violets a 16-14 win in the deciding set.
Grenauer led the Blue and White with a season-high 15 kills, her final kill sending her above 1,000.
Ingargiola added 14 kills and four blocks, while Sokolovich recorded another double-double with 14 kills and 18 digs to go with three blocks.
Koenig also tallied her second double-double of the day, pairing 48 assists with 10 digs. Guarino notched 18 digs, two more than senior
Harlee Scanlan and four more than freshman
Emily Shannon.
Shelby King led NYU (13-14) with 15 kills and 20 digs in the win.
The Cavaliers will close their Colonial States Athletic Conference slate on Wednesday, as they travel to Baltimore to face Notre Dame of Maryland University (13-8, 6-3 CSAC). A victory would give Cabrini its third consecutive undefeated conference season and fourth in the last five seasons.
First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
