SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini used nearly every second of today's Colonial States Athletic Conference opener to score a 2-1 victory at Marywood University.
With less than two minutes remaining in the game, sophomore
Alex Swallow knocked home the game-winning goal to improve the Cavaliers to 4-5 on the season and 1-0 in league play. The victory also marked the Blue and White's eighth consecutive CSAC victory.
Cabrini grabbed an early lead, as senior
Tiffany Phillips posted her team-leading sixth goal less than two minutes into the action after redirecting a shot from sophomore
Sara DeVita.
The lead was short lived as the Pacers evened the score in the seventh minute on Tori Jo Kakusian's blast from the top of the circle.
After 35 minutes, the game remained knotted on the scoreboard and the stat sheet, with both teams recording nine first half shots, including five each on goal, and splitting 11 penalty corners.
The Blue and White took control of the second half, building a 10-3 advantage in second half shots and earning 11 penalty corners to just one for the Pacers.
While Cabrini controlled the run of play, it couldn't find the back of the net until the 69th minute, when junior
Taylor Mack found pass found Swallow. The sophomore more made the most of her first shot of the season, beating Marywood's goalkeeper from six yards out.
The Pacers created two chances in the final 31 seconds but the Cavaliers blocked a shot and thwarted a penalty corner.
Sophomore
Jackie Neary recorded a team-high four of Cabrini's 19 shots in the win, one more than Phillips and fellow senior
Jen Webb.
Sophomore goaltender
Taylor Bookman tallied four saves to earn the victory.
The Cavaliers will return to Edith Robb Dixon Field on Tuesday, when they host Notre Dame of Maryland University (1-5, 0-2 CSAC). Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
