RADNOR, Pa. – Former Temple student-athlete Matt Maher delivered a powerful presentation on decision making to Cabrini's student-athletes last night in the Widener Lecture Hall.
The presentation, sponsored by Cabrini's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), detailed Maher's transition from standout high school and college athlete to convicted felon with one bad decision.
"It was awesome," said sophomore swimmer
Nicholas Vivian. "It really made me think about how the decisions I make today can affect the rest of my life. It was also very relevant, coming from a young local guy who was in our shoes not too long ago."
Maher, a former soccer and basketball star at Middle Township High School, was a standout soccer player at Temple before graduating in 2007 with a degree in Business administration and Legal Studies. Maher continued his soccer career after graduation, as he was a second pick of the New Jersey Ironmen of the Major Indoor Soccer League.
After his third professional season, Maher made one bad decision, choosing to drink and drive. In March 2009, Maher's sport utility vehicle crashed into the rear of a minivan on the Atlantic City Expressway, killing Hort Kap of Philadelphia, a 55 year old father of six.
Maher took full responsibility for his actions and was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison after being convicted of first degree aggravated manslaughter and drunk driving. Maher served 55 months in prison before being released on August 3, 2014.
Since the accident, Maher has used his experience to reach people around the globe with his message of accountability, remorse, and overcoming adversity through real life faith in action.
Maher has written 15 books and delivered hundreds of speeches, while his website has reached millions all over the world with his core message of how "Decisions Determines Destiny."
