LYNCHBURG, Va. – The No. 8 Cabrini men's lacrosse team saw its six goal cushion fade away, as the Cavaliers fell to No. 6 Lynchburg College 10-9 today in Lynchburg, Va. The loss dropped the Blue and White to 1-1 on the season.
Senior
Damian Sobieski led the Cavaliers with a game-high four goals, while sophomore
Evan Downey notched a pair of scores. Seniors
Mike Leyden and
Frank Magazu scored a goal each, while Leyden added a pair of assists.
The Hornets jumped out to an early lead with a pair of goals in the opening 72 seconds of play. Downey put the Blue and White on the board with an unassisted tally two minutes later.
Lynchburg regained its two goal cushion at the 8:25 mark before the Cavaliers took over. Sobieski found the back of the net twice in the final 2:25 of the opening quarter to even the score at three.
Cabrini continued its scoring run, as Sobieski completed his hat trick 2:42 into the second quarter. Downey added his second goal of the day at the 10:41 mark before Leyden found junior
Evan Allvord at the 6:38 mark, sending the Cavaliers into the halftime break with a 6-3 lead.
The Blue and White scoring run continued into the third period, as Leyden recorded an unassisted tally just over four minutes into the third. Magazu's first goal of the season came two minutes later.
Cabrini extended its scoring run to 8-0 in the final seconds of the third quarter, as Leyden found Sobieski for his fifth of the season.
Sometime between Sobieski's goal and the opening whistle of the fourth quarter, something changed. The Hornets ended Cabrini's run with seven consecutive goals of their own, including the game winner with 4:30 to play.
The Hornets won seven of the eight fourth quarter faceoffs, scooped 13 of the 16 ground balls and outshot the Cavaliers 19-7 in the final period, including 12-1 in shots on goal.
Senior
Tyler Johnston accounted for nine of Cabrini's 34 shots on the day, one more than Sobieski and two more than Leyden. Junior defensemen
Dan Hopson and
Brian Kittredge scooped four ground balls each and combined for seven caused turnovers.
The Cavaliers will look to regroup before visiting Hampden-Sydney (2-1) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
