OWINGS MILLs, Md. – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team snapped its two game losing streak with a big 8-6 win at No. 3 Stevenson University tonight to close the opening night of the Greene Turtle Classic at Stevenson's Mustang Stadium.

The victory improved the Cavaliers to 4-3 and snapped a four game losing streak to the Mustangs, with each precious loss coming in the NCAA Tournament.  Prior to today, the Blue and White's last win over Stevenson came in the 2006 CSAC Championship, when Stevenson was known as Villa Julie College.

Senior Tyler Johnston led the Cavaliers with five points on two goals and three assists.  Fellow seniors Mike Leyden and Damian Sobieski joined Johnston and junior Ethan Heisman with two goals as well.

Junior Dan Hopson scooped a team high four ground balls, one more than junior Carter Treuchet, sophomore Steve Halko and freshman Joey Hoey.  Senior Patrick Nolan caused a game high three turnovers, while Hopson forced two Mustang miscues.

Freshman netminder Tyler Morrell recorded 11 saves, including four in the decisive fourth quarter.  The rookie also anchored a defensive effort that force Stevenson into 32 turnovers, the most Stevenson has committed in over 130 games.

The Blue and White opened the scoring midway through the opening quarter, as Johnston found Leyden.  Leyden doubled the lead at the 5:58 mark with an unassisted tally, his 14th of the season.  Junior Brian Kittredge's pass found Sobieski with 2:39 left in the first quarter to put the Cavaliers ahead 3-0.

Cabrini took advantage of a Stevenson penalty at the end of the first quarter, as Johnston found Heisman 34 seconds into the second quarter for a man-up goal.  Heisman added to the lead two minutes later, as he converted a pass from senior Jake Donohoe into his third tally of the season.

The lead remained 5-0 until the Mustangs broke through the Cabrini defense with 3:44 left in the period.  Just over a minute later, Johnston pushed the lead back to five with his eighth goal of the campaign.  A late Mustangs' goal sent the teams into the halftime break with the Blue and White ahead 6-2.  

Sobieski pushed the lead back to five goals with his second score of the game just over five minutes into the second half.  After a Stevenson goal, Heisman netted his second goal of the night, coming with 93 seconds left in the quarter, to reestablish the five goal cushion.

The Mustangs began their comeback with a pair of goals in the final minute of the third quarter, cutting the Cabrini lead to 8-5 with 15 minutes to play.  Less than one minute into the final quarter, Stevenson scored a third unanswered goal.

Having seen large leads slip away in the fourth quarter on two occasions this season, the Cavaliers tightened their defensive focus, forcing 10 Stevenson turnovers in the final 15 minutes.

Kyle D'Onofrio led the Mustangs (3-3) with two goals, while goaltender Ben Richards recorded 10 saves in the loss.

The Cavaliers have a sort turnaround, as they will face Nazareth College (4-2) on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
