Early Deficit too Much to Overcome for No. 10 Men's Lacrosse

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team could not carry the momentum from yesterday's win over No. 3 Stevenson into today's action, as the Cavaliers fell to 4-4 with an 11-9 loss to Nazareth College at the Greene Turtle Classic at Stevenson University.

Senior Mike Leyden led the Blue and White with a season high six points on three goals and three assists.  Classmate Damian Sobieski's four points also marked a season high, as the senior recorded three goals and a helper.

The Cavaliers attempted a season low 25 shots, with Sobieski accounting for nine and Leyden and junior Evan Allvord recording five each.  Sobieski and sophomore Mike Crowley scooped three ground balls each, as Cabrini secured just 20 ground balls to 39 for the Golden Flyers.

Freshman goaltender Tyler Morrell suffered the loss after allowing six first quarter goals.  Fellow rookie Jake Reynolds manned the pipes the final three quarters, recording 10 saves.

Cabrini's lack of energy in the second half of rare back to back lacrosse games was evident from the opening faceoff, as the Blue and White attempted just seven shots and turned the ball over 10 times in the opening 30 minutes.

The Golden Flyers took full advantage, scoring nine first half goals.  Today marked the first time the Cavaliers have been held scoreless for two quarters in one game since March 29, 2008, when they were shutout in the first and third quarters in a 13-4 loss to SUNY Cortland.

The Blue and White regrouped during the halftime break and started the second half with renewed focus.  Leyden put the Cavaliers on the board less than two minutes into the third quarter, when he converted a pass from junior Cole Campbell.

Four minutes later, freshman Nick Vass found fellow rookie James Magnani for his sixth tally of the season.  Cabrini returned to the board 15 seconds later, as Leyden found senior Tyler Johnston for a goal.  Leyden and Sobieski combined for a goal and an assist on the next two Blue and White goals before Johnston found Leyden to cut the deficit to 9-6 with just over three minutes left in the quarter.

Nazareth snapped the six goal run in the final second of the third quarter, as the Golden Flyers closed the quarter with a 10-6 advantage.

Johnston tallied his second assist of the afternoon as the 12:32 mark, as his pass led to Sobieski's second goal of the game.  Nazareth took advantage of Cabrini's third penalty of the day, pushing its lead back to 11-7 with 9:01 to play.

Sobieski converted a Leyden pass into his 17th goal of the season at the 6:37 mark, while Campbell added an unassisted goal with 3:43 to play, pulling the Cavaliers to within 11-9.  The comeback fell short, as the Blue and White's final two shots were saved.

Luke wooters led Nazareth (5-2) with four goals and an assist, while goaltender Michael Cuciti recorded nine saves to earn the win.

Cabrini will return to action on Tuesday, when it opens Colonial States Athletics Conference play with a trip to Centenary College (1-5, 0-0 CSAC).  Face off is slated for 4 p.m.
