HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team opened Colonial States Athletic Conference play with a 9-4 victory at Centenary College. The win improved the No. 11 Cavaliers to 5-4 overall, while extending its conference win streak to 88 games.
Senior
Mike Leyden led seven Blue and White goal scorers, as the senior paired two goals and two assists on the day. Junior
Ethan Heisman added two goals and a helper, while senior
Tyler Johnston tallied three assists.
The Cavaliers fired 45 shots in the win, the most since attempting 55 in the season opening win over Haverford. Leyden recorded a game high 11 shots, while classmate
Damian Sobieski accounted for eight.
Senior
Anthony DiNenno was on fire at the faceoff spot, winning 15 of his 16 attempts and scooping a season high eight ground balls. Fellow senior
Patrick Nolan anchored the defensive effort, causing a career high five turnovers.
Freshman
Tyler Morrell earned his fifth win of the season after combining with fellow rookie
Jake Reynolds for three saves.
The Cavaliers fell behind early, as Centenary converted a man-up opportunity. The Blue and White trailed until the final minutes of the opening quarter, when junior
Joey Dalfo found Leyden to tie the score.
The Blue and White found its rhythm in the second quarter, as it outshot the Cyclones 12-2. Johnston found freshman James Magnini at the 12:40 mark for the rookie's eighth goal of the season to put the Cavaliers ahead for good. Sobieski netted his 18th goal of the season midway through the quarter, before Leyden added his team leading 19th tally to give Cabrini a 4-1 lead at the halftime break.
Cabrini continued its dominance into the third quarter, as it recorded an 18-2 shot advantage. Heisman extended the lead to 5-1 with a man-up goal five minutes into the period. The junior then connected with classmate
Sebastian Kerslake at the 6:19 mark.
Less than two minutes later, Dalfo marked the scoring column, converting a Leyden pass into his second goal of the campaign. A late Centenary tally sent the clubs into the fourth quarter with Cabrini holding a commanding 7-2 lead.
Senior
Jake Donohoe opened the fourth quarter scoring midway through the frame, recording an unassisted goal for his first goal of the year. The Cyclones posted a pair of goals, before Heisman's sixth goal of the year closed the scoring in the game's final minutes.
Michael Muff and Trevor Krupinski netted two goals each for Centenary (1-6, 0-1 CSAC), while goaltender Kevin Switzer recorded 19 saves.
The Cavaliers will face their final nonconference foe on Saturday, as they return to upstate New York to face No. 14 Ithaca College (6-2). Faceoff is scheduled for 12 Noon.
