RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team welcomes the Centenary Cyclones to Cabrini Field today in a conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. With just a few weeks left in the regular season, the Cavaliers and Cyclones are both in the middle of a tight race for postseason berths.
Cabrini went 2-1 against Centenary last season, with the second win coming in the first round of the Colonial States Athletics Conference Tournament, where the Blue and White topped the Cyclones 7-6 in eight innings. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, sophomore
Brianna Milillo's single to left field sent
Molly McDougall across the plate, a run that sent the Blue and White to the tournament's second round for the first time since 2010.
Sophomores
Taylor Mack and
Amber Dietrich combined for four RBI, while junior
Kaitlyn Cooper added a three bagger in the win. Sophomores
Kiley Sharp and
Taylor Gallagher combined to pitch seven solid innings. Sharp allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out three Cyclones in five innings pitched. Gallagher surrendered four runs but was able to hold off a hot Centenary offense down the stretch for the win.
The Blue and White come into today's doubleheader, having won 11 of its last 13 games. On Saturday, Cabrini split games at Neumann, falling 3-0, before topping the Knights 3-2 in the nightcap, to improve to 13-6 overall and 9-2 in the CSAC.
The Cavalier offense struggled to get anything going in game one, notching just six hits in seven innings. Freshman
Christine Ferraro was the only Cavalier to tally a pair of hits in the opener.
In game two, the Blue and White offense got going in the third inning. With two outs, Ferraro reached on an infield single. Dietrich followed with another infield single, while Ferraro advanced to third on the throw. Cooper singled to second base to plate Ferraro, giving the Cavaliers the 1-0 lead. The Knights answered back, scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom half.
In the top of the fourth, senior
Becca Miles reached first on another infield single. Milillo subbed in to pinch run for Miles and reached second following sophomore
Natalie Giannascoli's SAC bunt. Sophomore
Lindsay Savar stepped into the batter's box and crushed a two run home run, scoring Milillo with her second round tripper of the year.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Hohman went on to pitch four scoreless innings to earn the win. The freshman tossed a complete game, struck out four Knights and surrendered just two runs on nine hits to earn her fifth win of the year.
The Cavaliers tallied nine hits, as Ferraro, Cooper and Savar each notched a pair of hits in the win.
The Blue and White boasts a balanced attack with nine players hitting over .300 on the season. Dietrich and senior
Steph Diegel lead the way with matching .435 batting averages. Ferraro is batting .418 and leads the club with six stolen bases. Cooper's 26 RBI lead the CSAC, while the junior's four home runs and Diegel's three home runs are good for second and third in the conference, respectively.
Dietrich's three triples sit her third in the conference standings, while Diegel's 28 hits are good for fifth in the league.
Sharp is 6-3 on the year, and ranks third in the CSAC in wins. The sophomore has also tallied 30 strikeouts this season, ranking her seventh in the conference.
Centenary enters today's action ranked second in the conference standings at 7-1 and 8-14 overall. Yesterday, the Cyclones notched a pair of wins at Notre Dame of Maryland, topping the Gators 8-0 and 10-1.
In game one, the Cyclones tallied three runs early and added five more to end the game in the fifth. Sophomore Kylie Morgan-Polefka earned the win in the circle, allowing just six hits in five innings pitched.
Freshmen Carolyn Clites and Ashley Eisenstein notched a pair of hits, while five other Cyclones tallied a hit in the shutout.
In the nightcap, the Gators opened the scoring in the 1st inning with a run on a hit and an error. The Cyclones answered with a three run second inning to take the lead and added four more runs on three hits in the top of the third to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Cyclones notched two runs in the fifth and and tallied a run in the sixth to complete the sweep.
Senior Sam Belmonte and sophomores Alexis Wilson and Heather Passaro each earned a pair of RBI in the win, while freshman Samantha Darling earned the win in the circle.
Clites has made an immediate impact on the club, as the rookie leads the team with a .364 batting average and owns the team's only home run. The freshman lead the Cyclones with 24 hits, one more than Passaro, while the duo has scored nine runs each.
Passaro ranks 10th in the CSAC with two triples, while the sophomore's six triples ranks eighth. Belmonte has recorded five SAC bunts this season, good for third in the conference, while Einstein has knocked in eight runs for the Cyclones.
Darling leads the team with five wins in the circle and is tied with Sharp for seventh in the conference in stikeouts.
