Box Score RADNOR, Pa. - The Cabrini softball team improved to 15-7 on the season and 11-3 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference after today's 6-5 win against Gwynedd Mercy.
The Cavaliers and Griffins opened the doubleheader on April 7, completing the first game before the rain suspended the nightcap in the third inning.
Cabrini scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Christine Ferraro led the inning off with a walk. Freshman Alexandria Ramos reached first on a bunt single, while Ferraro advanced to third base on the throw. Junior Kaitlyn Cooper's sacrifice fly plated Ferraro to open the scoring.
The Griffins took advantage of a pair of Cavaliers' errors to tie the game in the second.
The Cavaliers regained the lead with three runs on a pair of hits in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and two outs, a passed ball scored sophomore Taylor Gallagher. Ramos then reached on an infield error, as Ferraro and sophomore Natalie Giannascoli came home.
Gwynedd Mercy managed to score two runs on two hits before the Griffins comeback efforts were interrupted by Mother Nature in the top of the third. The game was suspended with the bases loaded and one out, with Cabrini leading 4-3.
As play continued today, freshman Jess Giordano took over the pitching duties. Giordano was able to pitch her way out of the bases loaded jam after retiring a pair of Griffins to end the inning.
In the bottom half of the third, senior Becca Miles homered to right field to extend the lead to 5-3.
Gwynedd Mercy got the run back in the top of the fourth inning but the Cavalier offense tallied an insurance run in the sixth to bring the lead to 6-4.
The Griffins scored off a solo home run in the seventh but Giordano held it together and notched the game winning strikeout.
Freshman Kaitlyn Hohman pitched 2.1 innings and surrendered three runs on six hits before the rain halted game two. Giordano earned her third win of the season after throwing 4.2 innings, striking out two and allowing just two runs on four hits.
Miles tallied her second round tripper on the season, while seven other Cavaliers notched a hit. Cooper and senior Steph Diegel also earned RBI in the win.
The Blue and White will host Marywood (11-10, 10-2 CSAC) on Friday in a conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
