Box Score 2 ASTON, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team split a pair of games today to earned its way into the second day of the Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship Tournament and will face Immaculata tomorrow at 10 a.m.
The Blue and White improved to 26-10 with a 9-6 win over Gwynedd Mercy to clinch its spot in tomorrow's championship action, before the club fell to the Neumann Knights 5-2 in the nightcap.
The Immaculata Mighty Macs fell 3-2 to the Knights in today's second game but scored an 8-0 win over the Griffins to stay alive. The winner of the Cabrini and Immaculata game will play Neumann at 12 p.m.
The Blue and White trailed early against the Griffins, falling behind 6-0 by the second inning. The Griffins scored two runs on four hits in the first and added four more in the second on a pair of doubles.
After two scoreless innings, the Cavaliers scored three runs on four hits in the third. Freshman
Christine Ferraro opened the inning with a bunt single, before sophomore
Amber Dietrich followed with a single to right field. Junior
Kaitlyn Cooper's single to center field loaded the bases.
Senior
Steph Diegel reached on a fielder's choice, plating Ferraro. Fellow senior
Becca Miles followed with a single to left field, scoring Cooper. Both runners advanced after taking advantage of a wild pitch, before Diegel came home to score on sophomore
Lindsay Savar's sacrifice fly.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Hohman held the Griffins scoreless in the top of the fourth, before the Blue and White rallied in the bottom half for six runs on three hits.
Dietrich notched her fourth triple on the year, plating Ferraro and sophomore
Taylor Mack. Cooper and Diegel walked before Dietrich came home to score on an error by the shortstop to even the score at six. Cooper crossed home plate on a wild pitch, as Diegel advanced to third. Savar followed with a single to center field, plating Miles and Diegel to extend the lead to 9-6.
The score held at 9-6 the rest of the way, as the combination of freshmen
Kaitlyn Hohman and
Jess Giordano was enough to hold off the Griffins down the stretch.
Hohman pitched five innings of shutout relief, surrendering just five hits, before Giordano pitched the seventh inning to earn the save.
Dietrich and Miles went 3-4 and tallied a pair of RBI, while Ferraro, Cooper and Diegel combined for six runs.
Against Neumann, the Cavalier offense struggled to get going. Giordano held the Knights scoreless through three innings, before the club opened for five runs on six hits in the fourth.
The Cavaliers made a late rally in the seventh but fell just short, tallying just two runs. Sophomore
Natalie Giannascoli reached first on an infield single, before Ferraro drew the walk. Cooper singled through the left side, sending both runners home.
Cooper went 2-4 and notched the club's only RBI. Giannascoli went 2-3 and scored a run, while Dietrich added a pair of hits in the loss.
