RADNOR, Pa. - The Cabrini volleyball team faced a tough test in today's season-opener, as Haverford College visited Nerney Field House. Though the Cavaliers had their chances, the Blue and White suffered a tough five set loss.
Sophomore
Nicole Sokolovich notched a double-double in the 25-14, 18-25, 25-23, 12-25, 15-11 loss, pairing 14 kills with 19 digs on the night.
Senior
Cassidy Koenig controlled the offense with 46 assists to go with 11 digs, while junior
Kelly Guarino led the club with 21 digs. Seniors
Christine Ingargiola and
Jen Grenauer combined for 22 kills.
The Cavaliers struggled early, as Haverford notched the first seven points on the match, before cruising to a 25-14 opening set victory.
Cabrini jumped out to a 10-3 lead early in the second set. The lead grew to 16-6 before the Fords cut their deficit to 17-15. A Haverford service error allowed the Blue and White to extend its cushion to 20-15 before evening the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 second set win.
The third set was a nip and tuck affair in the early going, as the teams combined for seven ties and a pair of lead changes. The Cavaliers broke an 11-11 tie with seven consecutive points and seemed to be in control of the set but the Fords responded, scoring 14 of the set's final 19 points en route to a 25-23 win.
Just as tight as the third set was, the fourth was the exact opposite. Cabrini jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never let the Fords get back into the match, leveling the match at 2-2 after the 25-12 fourth set win.
Haverford took an early 6-2 lead in the fifth and deciding set, but the Cavaliers responded as a double block by Ingargiola and Sokolovich pulled Cabrini to within 6-5. While the teams alternated points down the stretch, the Fords managed to score back to back points on two occasions to grab its winning margin.
Senior Keri Godbe led the Fords with 17 kills and 25 digs.
The Blue and White will look for its first win this weekend at the Haverford/Swarthmore College Invitational. Cabrini will face Swarthmore (1-0) and SUNY-New Paltz (0-1) on Saturday at Haverford before facing Salisbury (0-1) and Carnegie Mellon (2-0) on Sunday at Swarthmore.
