ASTON, Pa. – The Cabrini volleyball team experienced the gamut of emotions during Thursday's match at Neumann, but after five thrilling sets, the Cavaliers continued their Colonial States Athletic Conference win streak.
The Blue and White's scored a 3-2 (25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 15-11) victory to mark its 28th consecutive CSAC win, improving the club to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Sophomore
Nicole Sokolovich had a monster match, pairing career highs of 21 kills and 20 digs. Senior
Cassidy Koenig also added a double-double with 53 assists and 17 digs.
Junior
Kelly Guarino matched Sokolovich with 20 digs and added a career high seven service aces. Sophomore
Anne-Marie Jones totaled 12 kills and seven digs.
Senior
Jen Grenauer posted seven kills and 13 digs to go with three total blocks, while fellow senior
Christine Ingargiola recorded nine kills and matched a career best with four total blocks.
After surrendering the first three points of the match, Cabrini rallied to take the next seven points. The Knights pulled to within 8-5 before the Cavaliers reeled off five straight points to take a commanding 13-5 lead, en route to a 25-18 first set win.
Neumann built an early lead in the second set before Cabrini won nine of the next 11 points, taking a 14-9 lead. Neumann fought back to a 17-16 deficit before the Cavaliers won five of six points, taking the second set 25-20.
After trailing for much of the third set, the Blue and White used a 4-1 spurt to take a 20-18 lead. Just as it looked like Cabrini would close the night in three sets, Neumann rallied to take the next three points and seven of the set's final nine points for a 25-22 win, pulling within two sets to one.
The Knights ran out to an early lead in the fourth set and never trailed in the frame. The Cavaliers evened the score at 14 and 15 but couldn't get over the hump, as Neumann evened the score at 2-2 with a 25-23 fourth set win.
With the match coming down to the all-important fifth set, both teams built early leads, but with the score tied at 4-4, the Cavaliers rallied to win six of the next seven points to take a 10-5 lead.
Three Neumann points pulled the Knights to within 10-8 but Cabrini answered with three straight points of its own, before closing the match with a 15-11 triumph in the final frame.
The Cavaliers have a few days to recover from tonight's action before visiting Widener University (9-6, 1-1 Commonwealth) on October 1. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. in Chester, Pa.
