SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Cabrini volleyball team split a pair of matches on day two of the Haverford/Swarthmore College Invitational, topping Salisbury University 3-2 before suffering a 3-1 loss to Carnegie Mellon College. The Cavaliers now stand at 3-2 on the season.
The Blue and White cruised to a two sets to none lead after taking the opening frames from Salisbury 25-18 and 25-20. The club seemed on its way to a sweep early in the third set when the Seagulls ran off seven consecutive points, turning a 16-15 deficit into a 22-16 advantage.
The Cavaliers could not regain its momentum, as they dropped the third set 25-20. A 9-3 spurt midway through the fourth set gave Salisbury a commanding 17-11 lead in the fourth, as it cruised to a 25-19 victory to even the match.
Salisbury built an early 7-3 lead in the decisive fifth set before the Cavaliers rallied. Keyed by a pair of kills by sophomore
Nicole Sokolovich, Cabrini turned a 10-7 deficit into a 12-10 lead. The Seagulls had an answer, evening the score at 14 before kills by Sokolovich and senior
Jen Grenauer gave the Blue and White its 16-14 winning margin.
Grenauer led the Cavaliers with 15 kills in the opener, one more than Sokolovich and two more than sophomore

Cassidy Koenig continued her solid play, posting 41 assists.

Kelly Guarino keyed the defense, leading a trio of Cavaliers with double figure digs with 19. Freshmen

The Blue and White faced a tough task as it closed the weekend against an undefeated Tartans club. Both clubs were on their games in the early going before Carnegie Mellon recorded four out of five pints to take a 17-14, an advantage it held until a 25-19 win in the opening set.
Despite Cabrini grabbing an early lead in the second, the frame remained tight until a pair of kills by sophomore
Chelsea Jones gave the Blue and White a 24-21 lead, as it evened the match at a set a piece.
After falling behind early in the second set, the Cavaliers netted six consecutive points to build a 13-12 lead but the Tartans responded with five straight points en route to a 25-16 third set win.
Cabrini built an early lead in the fourth set before Carnegie Mellon closed the door, scoring six of the next seven points, as it closed the match with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set.
Sokolovich netted a team-high 15 kills, while senior
Christine Ingargiola broke Saturday's career high with 13 kills. Guarino earned match high honors with 15 kills, while
Emily Shannon recorded 11. Koenig added 40 assists in the loss.
Gaurino was also named to the All-Tournament Team after recording 92 digs in the four matches.
The Cavaliers will have a few days off before returning to action next Friday, when it travels to Boston for the MIT Invitational. Cabrini will face Brandeis University (2-4) and Wellesley College (1-2) on Friday before meeting Springfield (4-0) and Bates Colleges (0-0) on Saturday.
