Volleyball Scores 3-0 Win over Widener

RADNOR, PA – Despite slow starts in each of the three sets, the Cabrini volleyball team rallied to top Widener University 3-0 tonight at Nerney Field House.  The 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 nonconference win improved the Cavaliers to 10-12 on the season.

Senior Kelly Guarino led a balanced offense that featured five players with at least five kills.  The senior paired a match high 14 kills and 19 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.

Junior Anne-Marie Jones added eight kills and matched a career high with three service aces. Classmate Chelsea Jones and sophomore Emily Shannon added six kills each, while Shannon tallied 13 digs.

Freshman Emily Stokarski posted her third double-double of the campaign with 34 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore Ashley Shannon recorded 12 digs in the Cavaliers' defensive effort.

Both teams exchanged points in the early going of the opening set before the Blue and White established a slim three point cushion midway through the frame. The Pride responded with a 5-0 run, eventually pushing its lead to a seemingly commanding 20-16.

A Cabrini timeout refocused the club, as it regained control of the set with a 7-1 spurt to take a 23-21 lead before kills by junior Kaylee Plisinski and Chelsea Jones sealed the first set win.

The Cavaliers could not carry their momentum into the second set, as errors and miscommunication led to an 11-4 lead for Widener. A Pride attack error gave Cabrini the opening it needed, as Emily Shannon served the Blue and White to six consecutive points.

Minutes later, it was Plisinski at the service line that seven straight points, turning a 14-12 deficit into an 18-14 lead.  Widener pulled within 18-17 before Cabrini recorded seven of the final nine points of the set.

Cabrini was determined to not repeat the second set as it opened the third. The Cavaliers build small leads but watched the Pride respond each time to close the gap.  A 5-1 spurt midway through the set gave the Blue and White a 12-7 lead and it never looked back.  Widener
came within 14-12 before Cabrini pushed its lead back to six points.

Sophomore Natalie Winn led Widener (10-15) with seven kills, whle senior Lauren Elliott took match high honors with 21 digs.

The Cavaliers will return to Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Tuesday, as they welcome Notre Dame of MD (11-5, 3-3 CSAC) to Nerney Field House.  First serve is scheduled for 7pm.
