RADNOR, PA – After a scoreless, defensive first half, the Cabrini field hockey team found its offensive rhythm to score a 3-1 victory over the visiting Marywood University Pacers.
With the team's fourth consecutive win, the Blue and White took sole possession of second place in the Colonial States Athletic Conference at 4-1 and 8-6 overall.
Today's game marked the program's annual Cancer Awareness Game and was dedicated to the memory of Mitch Kline, Cabrini's former head softball coach who lost his battle against brain cancer on September 15. All proceeds from today's game will be donated to the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training Program in Kline's honor.
Today was also the final regular season home game for Cabrini's seniors
Taylor Mack and
Kylie McDevitt and the duo had a huge impact on today's outcome.
Despite the ball traveling end to end, the teams combined for just three shots in the first half. Both clubs seemed to be comfortable with the game's pace and score, thinking that one goal could decide the outcome.
Cabrini turned up its pressure to open the second half, as Mack put the Blue and White on the board in the 38th minute. Junior
Alex Swallow's pass found Mack alone at the left post for the game's first goal.
Mack made her second mark in the scoring column just five minutes later, as junior
Sara Johnsen's crossing pass found her at the far post for her 16th goal of the campaign.
Junior
Jackie Neary sealed the win in the 47th minute with an incredible individual effort. The junior collected the ball about 20 yards from the goal and weaved through the Marywood defense before completing her eighth goal of the year.
Marywood tried to mount a late comeback, as senior Gabby Bower's near post shot found the back of the goal.
McDevitt and the Blue and White defense held firm over the final 18 minutes of the game, fighting off three penalty corners and a pair of shots. Junior goaltender
Taylor Bookman notched one of her two saves in the win during the defensive stand.
Today's game features just 12 shots, with seven coming from Cabrini sticks. Mack recorded a game high three shots, one more than Neary and classmate
Maddy Worley.
Sophomore Kerri Mountz notched three saves in the loss for Marywood (9-5, 3-2 CSAC).
The Cavaliers will hit the road on Saturday, as they travel to Baltimore to face Notre Dame o Maryland University (1-11, 0-5 CSAC). Game time is scheduled for 12 noon.
