Cavaliers to Host Cairn at Cabrini Field Today


RADNOR, Pa. - The Cabrini softball team is looking for a pair of wins today, as it hosts the Cairn Highlanders in a Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cabrini Field. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
 
The Cavaliers and Highlanders last squared off in Langhorne, Pa. on March 19, 2015. The Blue and White emerged victorious in both games, topping the Highlanders 15-0 and 10-0, respectively.
 
In game one, Cabrini scored two runs in the first, four runs in the second, seven runs in the third and one run in the fourth and fifth inning. In the pitcher's circle, junior Kiley Sharp and sophomore Jess Giordano combined for five strike outs in the win, while sophomore Alexandria Ramos collected three RBI in the batter's box.
 
In game two, the Cavaliers opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning and added seven more runs in the fourth innning. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hohman earned the win in the circle after tossing four innings and surrendering just two hits. Three Cavaliers tallied two RBI each, including senior Kaitlyn Cooper who also recorded two hits and two runs scored.
 
Cairn will be looking to step into the win column today when it faces the Cavaliers, as the Highlanders are 0-18 overall and 0-8 in conference action.
 
The Highlanders are coming off a pair of loses against the Cedar Crest Falcons. Cedar Crest topped the highlanders 13-0 in game one, before it earned a 22-1 win in the nightcap.
 
After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons scored two runs in the second, nine in the third and one run in the fourth and fifth inning. Game two followed a similar path, as it was all Cedar Crest. The Falcons scored a pair of runs in the first inning, nine in the third, seven in the fourth and four in the fifth, while holding the Highlanders to just one run through five.
 
Cairn Freshman Katelynn Reiss has been a tough out from the batter's box in 2016, as the rookie catcher leads the team with a .429 batting average, 15 hits, seven RBI and one home run. Fellow freshman Jessica Rolo has also been a solid contributor to the Highlanders offense this season, with a .333 batting average, 13 hits, six runs scored and two RBI.
 
Senior Rachel Clark and freshman Katelyn Loveless have struggled from the pitcher's circle in 2016, as the duo have combined for 404 runs and 327 earned runs. Clark has an ERA of 27.11, while Loveless has an ERA of 29.88.
 
Runs have not been an issue for the Blue and White lately, as the Cavaliers have out scored their opponents 66-22 in their last eight games.
 
Cabrini is riding a hot streak, winning seven of its last eight ball games. Yesterday, the Blue and White scored 8-3 and 8-4 wins at Marywood, improving the club to 11-10 and 8-0 in the CSAC.
 
The Cavaliers scored five runs through the first two innings of game one, before the Pacers answered back with two runs in the second. The Blue and White scored two runs in the sixth and once more in the seventh, while holding the Pacers to just one run in the sixth to capture the victory.
 
Three Cavaliers earned a pair of RBI in game one. Freshman Marissa Alpaugh led the way with three, while Cooper and junior Lindsay Savar each recorded a pair.
 
Giordano picked up her sixth win in the pitcher's circle, as the sophomore improved to 6-4 on the year, after throwing seven innings, striking out three Pacers and surrendering just two earned runs.
 
Trailing 2-1 in the fourth inning of game two, Cooper's triple to right center scored three Cavaliers. Marywood got a run back in the bottom half. Cabrini out scored Marywood 4-1 the rest of the way to complete the sweep.
 
The Cavaliers outhit the Pacers 18-10, with sophomore Christine Ferraro, Savar and Giordano recording three base hits each.
 
Sharp improved to 2-1 in the circle, after allowing just three earned runs through seven innings of action.
 
On the year, Cooper holds a team high .400 batting average, 24 hits and 18 RBI. Alpaugh ranks first on the team with three home runs and 24 hits, while averaging .364 on the year.
 
Giordano's 6-4 record, 2.79 ERA and 36 strikeouts are all team bests, while the sophomore also ranks among the conference leaders in wins, strikeouts and opponent's batting average (.235). Hohman has also been more than solid in the circle for the Blue and White, as the sophomore has a 4.50 ERA to go along with 17 strike outs.
